The doctor came into the cold, green and blue waiting room.
Three faces of distress were layed before his hazel eyes. In his hand he held a white clipboard, and in the other a stack of white paper.
It was an odd silent feeling at that waiting room. No one but Lucy, Timothy and Katherine were there...for you must remember it was Christmas day.
The doctor neared the family with a strange frown on his older looking brow, "I-.." he started in a very faint whisper, "This may be hard on you. But, Edward...is dieing." He waited then continued, "We need to operate right away to stop the fluid."

Lucy looked at the doctor in disbelief, "He's dieing? Edward is dieing?" Her eyes filled with tears as she looked to her father, "Daddy.....please.....don't let Edward die...." With her lip beginning to quiver, she looked to her mother, "Mommy, you told me that he wasn't going to die!"

Katherine stared at the doctor and then heard Lucy. She swallowed hard and looked down to the poor little girl. "Lucy, sweetheart. The doctor is going to do everything in his power to fix Edward up. Okay?" She told her softly.

Timothy patted little Lucy on the leg, "Yes Lucy, the doctor will help."
The doctor soon spoke up again, this time, in not such a low whisper. "Unfortunately, we do not have the tools or regulations necessary for his operation...that's why I've brought you these papers. Now, you must listen carefully and understand what I'm saying. Edward doesn't have much time."

Lucy looked back to the doctor and wiped away her tears. She sniffed a little and then said quietly, "Can I see Edward now, please?" She hopped off the seat and innocently looked into the doctor's eyes.

Katherine looked up to the doctor and slowly nodded. "Sure, go ahead and tell us... we need to make sure that Edward makes it out alright." She said softly and made sure to pay close attention.

Timothy reached and scooped Lucy up into his lap, "No Lucy. Shhh. Let's listen to the doctor." He then nodded his head for the doctor to continue.
So, the doctor did. "The only way we have an option for saving Edward is if you sign this, and we can place him with the professionals who have the proper regulations for this type of procedure."
He handed Shannon the papers, with the name N.A.S.A. printed at the top.

Lucy sat quietly in her father's lap and looked down at the papers. She did not understand them....that stuff was for adults. Her eyes looked at the doctor's face and then back to the papers.
Curling up closer to her father's chest, she rested her head on it and spoke not a word.

Katherine raised an eyebrow and looked to the doctor, after she saw the name that was on top of the paper. "N.A.S.A? Those are the only people that can take care of him?" She asked the doctor, seeming quite a bit shocked that they would need someone so professional for Edward's condition. She hadn't thought it was that bad.

The doctor nodded his head. "Yes, miss. Now we don't have much time."
He handed her a pen and said in a memorized voice, "You are going to sign these papers willingly and wholly aware that anything that may happen to Edward in the damaging or deathly nature is not a liable excuse to sue N.A.S.A?"

Katherine sighed deeply and slowly nodded. She held the pen in her hand and slowly leaned forward so that she could write down her signature.

Lucy watched her mom's hand grab the pen. Her eyes drifted silently toward the papers. With her thoughts swimming, she thought of Edward and hoped that she might be able to be with him soon.

"You're doing the right thing.." the doctor said, reaching down and taking the papers.
He gave her an unnaturally friendly pat on Shannon's shoulder before striding away into the cold white hallway.
