Lucy stared at him with horror, as now his face was revealed. It looked like a ghost or a dead person she had seen in scary movies at home.
Tucking her legs up, she placed her hands on her ears and tucked her head down into her knees.

He stopped his steps. He would not grow any closer, but the black eyes that sat on the ghostly pale face, seemed kind and loving.
They examined the small girl. She was pretty, her skin was perfect, her brown hair like silk in the wind. She was just like he had pictured her, a little flower amongst thorns...

Lucy's tears fell from her face, for a few seconds, as she allowed her fear to take over. Regaining courage, she wiped away the tears and looked slowly back up to Edward.
She never spoke a word, but just stared.

His head bowed down sadly, revealing a nasty mess of plastic hair. He lowered his hands, wanting desperately to hide them...

A strange sensation came over Lucy....maybe the scary man wasn't bad at all. Mabye he just had no friends. Of course, we must remember that Lucy was only eight and this is how her thinking was.
She looked intently at him, with wet cheeks, and said softly, "It's ok....are you ok?"

The man nodded his head, politely but still very shaken.
Her voice was like sweet notes of music to his ears. He hadn't heard a child's voice in more than a decade..and the voice nearly made him jump in fear.

Lucy's compassionate qualities finally set in. Standing up slowly, she began to make her way towards Edward. Even though she felt sorry for him....in the back of her mind, she was still scared.
"Do you have any friends? What's your name?" she said now a little louder.

There was a long, dry silence. To Edward’s amazement, the little girl’s face transformed from terror beyond reason to a politely cautious and skeptical qualities.
As Lucy walked up to Edward, he continued to back away from her.

Lucy continued to walk toward Edward. She was now so confused.....the scary man was walking away from her...... "What's the matter? Where are you going?" she said with her voice puzzled.

Lucy stopped and turned her head confused, "Hurt me?" She thought for a minute and then replied, "Oh! With those knives? What exactly are those things?" She then walked toward Edward, again, trying to examine the sharp objects.

Now standing directly in front of Edward, Lucy examined the scissors. She reached out gently to touch them, but then her attention turned to his face. Her eyes scanned over his face observently. "What happened to your face?" she said sadly.

Edward froze into place. He didn't know how to answer the child's little voice of curiosity. He didn't know what was wrong, or what happened to his face. He had never really noticed the decorative lines that covered his pale features.
