Miranda rushed upstairs and went to the trunk, where he kept the pistols. She took them out and rushed back down the stairs, handing one to Nathan. "Let's go," she said. She called for Margaret, who helped round up the others. They raced through the woods and made it to the river in about a half an hour.

Miranda and the others waited by the shore, but they never came. Miranda did her best to keep the children quiet and calm, but they were older now and could ask more questions. At sundown, she was truely worried.
