Post subject: | RPG Awards Summer 2008 - NEED RPER INPUT PLEASE |
As some of you will probably remember, last summer we had the RPG Awards 2007. As we're coming up on summer 2008, I was thinking I might run the same awards again. As a quick recap - basically, the awards are for outstanding characters in Sharky's, in the last year. They're like Academy Awards, so we'll have Best Female Character, Best Male Character, Best Romantic Pairing, etc. What I need from you guys are nominations. So over a period of probably a couple of weeks, I'll need you to PM me the characters you think should win a particular award, and then we'll vote. I'm also looking for a bit of input on the awards themselves. We had quite a few last year (I won't bother to list them, I'm sure you probably remember most) and what with that experience and a glance at the RPGs currently active in Sharky's, I've revised it a bit. So the ones I'm thinking we'll do this year are: Best Female Character Best Male Character (these two are open for discussion. Last year they were a bit more diverse, and if you'd like to have more specific ones like Best Female/Male Fantasy Character as well, we can twiddle with that) Most Original Character Best Romantic Pairing Funniest Character (unsure if we're keeping this. Thoughts please?) Best Supporting Character (again, unsure) Best Villain Best Non-MS (I think we'll keep this one, but if it's not looking like there are many nominations, maybe not) Also, I don't know whether to do any sort of canon-character award, so some input on that would be appreciated. So if you'd like to see these awards happen, please post and say so, because sparse response here means I'll decide they're not worth doing. Also, it would be really nice if you could commit to nominating at least a few. Thank you! |

Oh, yay! ![]() ![]() On the subject of what awards, I believe we should keep the funniest charactor and best supporting charactor. Both charactors are truly important to the RP! The funniest charactor is what makes us excited to read the posts, and the supporting charactor is, sometimes - not always, the reason the main charactor is so amazing! I wouldn't get ride of either. That's my view on the matter. ![]() |

Oo! This sounds fun! I would love to help! And I agree with Tur. I think they Funniest and Best Supporting Characters are very important. You should keep 'em. |

I definitely think they're important - I'm just a tad worried about not having enough characters nominated. But thanks for responding! Very glad to know I'll have participation. |

Oh yes! I would love to see these. I was actually wondering about them about a week or two ago. |

I think you should keep the funniest and supporting character awards! Also, I think you should put the best male and female characters into groups such as fantasy, sci-fi, maybe cannon, pirates. And maybe even best lotr rpg, potc rpg, and so on. But I don't know, thats just my opinion. I think more awards the more a chance people have. You know? There are so many rpers out there. |

My issue with having awards for the actual RPGs themselves is that that's really hard to judge, because anyone voting has to read through the entire thing, and I don't think many of us here would be too crazy about the idea of spending that much time on it. The thought has occurred to me before, but I could never see how to make the voting work. I think you're right, though, in that just Best Male and Best Female is too broad. I'm not sure quite how to divide it, however. Best Fantasy and Best Pirate seem a bit too specific, I'd like to have something that encompasses more genres. Anybody else have input? Oh, and in case I didn't specify, all these awards are for LotR characters as well, but only original ones. Does anybody have an opinion on whether or not a Canon Character award should be included in the list? |

For dividing best male and best female you could divide into best male real life character and best male fantasy character, and the same for female, if that makes sense. |

That's a possibility, yeah, though I'm not sure about the ratio of fantasy to real life to other RPGs currently in Sharky's. We have a lot of genres, so I'm kinda hoping we can combine them in hopefully two categories instead of just one broad one. |

Double-post, I know - what do you all think about having the categories split into Best Female/Male Hero (or Main Character) and Best Female/Male Supporting Character? That way our categories still encompass all genres, but they're slightly more diverse. Thoughts? (Thanks to potr for the original idea) |

I actually really like that idea. ^ It makes sense and is not too broad, but not specific either. ![]() |

Okay, that's probably what I'll do then. Also, anyone have any ideas about voting? Last year I asked every nominee (well, the user of the character who was nominated) to pick three posts of that character that summed up who they were and what they were like. This did turn out to be a lot of reading, but it was definitely better than having to go through a whole RPG. Should we do it the same way this year, or should there be alterations? |

I like the way it was done last year, but I was thinking that the people nominatoed could also have the choice of submitting a very detailed bio. It would make it easier to fit the capture the entire character. |

Eh, but some characters are so very difficult to capture in even the most detailed bio. I mean, for all that I can say that someone is sarcastic or quick-witted or gentle, it's not nearly as effective as showing that someone being that way. Unless you meant a bio as well as sample posts? Because that might work, though I'm still not a fan of judging characters by their bios. ![]() |

Yeah, I think bios don't really say much unless they're giving a character overview, which might help if the sample posts are confusing. If we're doing sample posts, remember to specify whether to judge from prior experience or the posts themselves. There was some confusion last time. |
