There was a soft "oooo-ooooh" from behind Lily as Andrea and a few other Gryffindor girls listened to the words exchanged by Lily and two of the infamous foursome.
The still smiling Lily rolled her eyes. That Sirius Black was a strange character, an anomaly on his family's history. His younger brother, Regulus, was in school, and was the archetypical kind of person she didn't like: proud, arrogant and a little too interested in the Dark Arts. It was the opinion of most that the entirety of Slytherin possessed such traits, and she was no exemption from this. The personality of most Slytherins disturbed her slightly - and there was only one exception to that rule. Where the hell was Snape?
"He's predicatable as ever, then." James' overbearing presence was not unusual anymore; it had ceased to irritate her as much as it used to, but she'd never miss the chance to throw a witticism of her own his way. It made for amusing situations in the Common room. Flashing James a final, bright smile, she said "Good luck with that," then turned to the safety - um, maybe that wasn't the right word - of the giggling girls she'd been conversing with earlier.
Frozen with a smirk on her face, Andrea sighed, still watching the foursome instead of her friend. "I honestly don't know why you don't just give up. He's certainly not going to..."

Sirius grabbed James by his cloak and dragged him over to some free seat at the Gryffindor table. "Come on" he said with a firm voice. "Your eyes might else pop out."
Sirius looked longing to the still empty plates at the table, realising he was very hungry. He then glanced at the Head table and noticed that Professor Dumbledore had just taken his seat. A smile appeared on Sirius' face: he'd always had the deepest respect for the Headmaster but he also felt affection for this man who possesed most contradicting qualities of being highly intelligent and nuts.
The students had become silent by the appearance of the Headmaster who watched the doors closely. So most students followed his example and waited for Professor McGonagall and the first-years to enter.

[Don't die! ]
A hush surrounded everyone in the Hall quite suddenly when people started to notice the Headmaster's arrival. Lily smiled to herself, noting that Dumbledore often had that effect on people - it was far from unusual.
Apart from muted whispers, everyone surrounding her was silent and still. Following the gaze of the crowd, she saw the door of the Great Hall and waited with quiet anticipation for the Sorting to begin. The poor eleven-year-olds always looked as if they were walking to their deaths, rather than to face an old hat. She knew from experience that they probably thought it was going to do something weird - like sprout legs and arms or produce a fluffy white rabbit or something equally as strange.
Well, she supposed if they were still frightened of the Sorting Hat by the end of the night, they'd better make sure they never came face-to-face with the Whomping Willow. That would certainly do them nofavours, and the last thing the school needed was a load of traumatized first-years running around...
Seconds later, a distant clunk broke her trail of thought, and the doors began to swing inwards. This sent a ripple of excitement through the students, who began to mutter or point and wave. So, still the same crowded, over-excitable inhabitants of Hogwarts. Lily smiled. Nothing had changed.
