[ Saira - perhaps we should wait up for Melda.. and actually Dumbledore and McGonagall are still in the Headmaster's office.. so I don't think it's not possible that the sorting already started as McGonagall usually leads the First Years in? :) ]

[Can I post? xD I'll just erase my post if you want me to wait.]

"Oh, you know." Remus waved one hand in the air absently, as if trying to brush off the hidden implications behind Sirius' seemingly innocent question. And perhaps it had indeed intended to be an innocent one, but Remus could never shake off that feeling that he was different from the rest of his good friends. He shrugged his shoulders a little and smiled.

"It was interesting. I heard you spent the summer at James' place. I'm sorry I couldn't make it." He glanced at the other students, suddenly wishing that he had worn a better pair of robes. He automatically straightened the tattered state of his old clothes. "I assume the food was delicious, as usual."

Peter, on the other hand, had strategically placed himself between James and Sirius when they weren't looking, his eyes casted downwards at the smooth stone tiled floor. Why were they standing so close to the Slytherins, anyway? He snuck a quick glance at Severus' robes, marveling at Prong's extraordinarily detailed work. If only he could do the same thing just as easily and carelessly as his admirable friend, he thought wistfully.

Suddenly inspired by a random wave of courage, he straightened up and pointedly glared at a nearby second-year Slytherin, crossing his arms over his chest in what he thought to be a very superior way. He even went as far as to shake his head at the little boy, as if he had just done something very naughty. The second-year, however, seemed unperturbed by this very pathetic, unsuccessful stake of dominance, and proceeded to brandish his wand at poor Peter, who instantly let out a small mouse-like squeak and inched closer to James, trying to mask his fright with a jerky cough.

Saira- you might just let them chit chat before the feast begins ;) I know how yo ulook forward to posting :P ]

Sirius could not be fooled: he knew Remus' reserved nature and his feelings about his little hairy problem so he patted his friend encouraging on the shoulder. "Not having any problems I hope?" He realised how tough it had to be for his friend to live an ordinairy life like every other person and how important it was to keep his secret safe.
"
"Ah yes" Sirius responded. "I couldn't take anymore of their comments how pure and powerfull th Black family is and the praises of the Dark Lord. So I left." For a moment his face wore a bitter grimace but then his features softenend. "James' parents have been too kind for me."

Noticing Peter's behaviour Sirius sighed. He'd always thought that Pettigrew was kind of pathetic but he would never confront him with that. He was friendly guy but a coward, and no match for them.
"Wormtail.. I believe they gave you a wand to use it." Sirius rolled his eyes, which immediately made him look more haughty than before. "Please tell me you can handle a second-year.."

{Okays!}

The look of anger on Snape's face was replaced by one of hatred as he spotted the foursome. Every time he set eyes on James Potter...

He allowed himself a smile. "His time will come..." he'd spent a very productive summer. The advantage of being an orphan was that no one had missed him. When all the other's had had to disperse, he had stayed behind basking in their glares as he seemed to rise in the Dark Lord's favour.

Malfoy and Lestrange had caught up. Lucius was sniggering. "Snape, you might want to take off your cloak before we get to the Hall."

He whipped it off and sneered at the glitter. Rodolphus waved his wand and the spell faded.
Severus looked up and took that to be an apology. It was the best he was going to get, so he inclined his head and hopped into the coach.

As the coach bumped up and down, Severus sat fuming. His companions were quiet, each lost in his own thoughts.

It had been an intense summer... Severus smiled smugly at the passing trees. Having no family had its advantages. He had been able to spend more time with the Dark Lord than any of them and seemed to be rising in favor, despite being so young...

He hoped he would be able to talk to Lily soon. Maybe... Maybe he would even tell her...

"We're here."

--------------------------------------------

The Entrance Hall was packed with students from all House, waiting to get into the Great Hall before the first years arrived.

"Where in Merlin's beard is McGonagall?" A fifth year Ravenclaw muttered. Snape leaned against a gargoyle looked glumly around him.

"Pathetic." Bellatrix sneered at Lucius. "I can't believe that my sister put up with you. But then again she's just as silly." She pouted and tossed her head. "Im the one who the Dar-"

"Bella!" Severus grabbed her arm and she let out a squeak. "Are you mad?" He breathed, "Do you want the entire school to know? Post the plans in the Great Hall maybe?"
She snatched back her arm and stuck out her tongue. "I think Sev is jealous." She whispered back before melting into the crowd.

Snape groaned and resumed his surly disposition. Bella was as fanatic as they come, but she had no idea how to keep her mouth shut.
He shot a dark glance at the hated foursome before Rita Skeeter enticed him into a discussion about Potions.

{Hoping its appropriate!}

[Jeez, I'm sorry guys. Sudden and complete absences suck, a lot. :P
Never mind, Lily's back nowz. Thanks for waiting up. :)]

Excitement was once again racing through Lily's body, a feeling she was pretty used to, for it was the rush one got when re-entering the Wizarding world.
The energy buzz would've lit up her face anyway, but she was especially happy to be returning to Hogwarts this year, and not just because it was her last. Summers at home had become difficult, saddening. Her parents were fine, if a little bemused to see her abilities for whet they were, but her sister hated her. Petunia would never say it, not in front of their parents, but it was in every look and word she gave Lily, and it was painfully obvious. The bitterness between her and Petunia had been putting increasing strain on their relationship for years, but it had never been as bad as this. She retained a little hope of repairing the fractured bond of sisterhood, but Tuney seemed unwilling to even speak with her.
It sucked. There was no other phrase to cover it.

Dwelling over her home situation on the train had put a damper on her mood slightly, but it had the advantage of keeping her thoughts occupied. The next thing she knew, they were pulling up outside Hogsmeade station, and students were crowding the platform. Friends found one another and started recounting the entirety of their holiday for the other to listen to, to discuss Quidditch team scores, and generally just reacquaint themselves. Lily soon found herself accompanied by a small party of people she knew, who all began laughing and joking as them made their way steadily towards the dark silhouette that was the castle.

It took a while to exit the platform, there were so many people. Sensory overload clouded everyone's judgement, for between the train's lights, wandlight, the loud, echoing call of Firs' years, over here and the boisterous students, no-one could hear themselves think.

Carriages lined the road up to the castle, horseless and dark in the evening light. People piled into them, Lily among them, so that soon they were rattling off, their voices getting progressively louder as they tried talking over one another. Lily laughed as Andrea, one of her housemates, shot a particularly irritated look at a Ravenclaw girl after she'd successfully blocked out Andrea's incessant chatter. The carriage was alive with laughter and gossip, and Lily's mood sky-rocketed; it elated her to merely be encompassed in an atmosphere that was warm and cheery, rather than the brittle bitterness that resided at home.

*

Hogwarts was looking over them now, its windows throwing shadows over the extensive grounds and the coaches that made their way through the Gates. Conversation had turned quickly from summer to lessons and the year coming, and the looming prospect of NEWTs. Lily pulled a face.
"Andie, can you please give us five minutes of being back before you bring up the exams?"
Andrea smiled at her friend. "It didn't take me long to annoy you."
"Never does," came the reply as Lily jumped out of the carriage and brushed away the red hair that obscured her face, then turned to wait for her companion.

The mass of people entering the Entrance Hall ushered them all onwards, so none could stand still for very long without being pushed aside or trampled completely. Familiar faces littered the place, organized into friendship groups and houses. Anticipation hung in the air, loitering in an echo of the students' actions.

Just the mention of the Black family made his skin crawl. He absolutely hated everyone in that family and all relations to the Blacks except for Sirius of course. But the man was no Black save for his last name, which was more of a curse than anything.

His parents were all too willing to have the young Black into their home and James was just glad he could get his friend away everything, if only for the summer.

"You'd do the same for me if you could." James smirked before turning to Remus. He would have loved for Moony to join them but then his parents would have found out what exactly the man was and he wasn't sure if their old hearts could take it.

Hazel eyes moved from Remus to Peter who was trying his best to scare some second year and doing a very pitiful job of it. He had to hold back his laughter with the sleeve of his robe, pressing it against his mouth.

"Indeed, have we taught you nothing Wormtail?" He wasn't going to waste his efforts on some second year that wasn't even apart of their house.

"I'm starving I hope..." His words trailed off as a flash of red caught his attention. All his focus moved from the great hall that they were arriving into and to the beautiful Lily Evans.

Remus smiled bitterly, clapping a hand on Sirius' back. "Don't worry, Padfoot." He winked. "Everything's fine." His gaze fell on James, who was staring at Lily in such a way that he felt like he was intruding on some sort of intimacy between the two, even though Lily hadn't spotted James yet. He placed a hand on James' shoulder and smiled a little before letting it fall back to his side again. His sighed when he caught sight of Peter, who was now squashed between Sirius and James in what looked like a very uncomfortable position. He almost looked like he was half-rat, crouching between the two boys and wringing his hands nervously. Remus frowned.

"Peter, what's wrong?"

"Nothing!" Peter squeaked while chewing obsessively on his lip, causing his words to come out slightly mangled and incomprehensible. His beady black eyes were bulging out of his head. "I most certainly can take on a second-year." He protested, throwing his best self-important look at Sirius to justify himself. "I just... figure it wouldn't be fair to the poor kid... that's all." He muttered unconvincingly. He immediately tried to distract the others by eagerly responding to James' offhand comment.

"Yes! Food!" He squeaked. "I-I hope they have lots of... food." He trailed off when he realized that James wasn't even looking his way. With pink cheeks, he resumed counting the tiny holes in the tiled floor.

Rita was scribbling Severus' advice, and he looked up. He practically sensed Lily Evans before he saw her.
Flicking his hair out of his eyes, he turned his head unerringly to where she stood, laughing with a group of Gryffindor girls. His expression changed to one of intense pain and desperation. He just stared through the crowd, noting every movement of her hands, the way her hair moved and that breathtaking smile..

And then he saw James looking at her. He snarled and stormed off through the crowd and slipped into a quiet hallway.
He sank to the floor and pulled his knees up. This was all James' fault. If it wasn't for that moronic, pompous idiot Lily would still be talking to him. He was doing everything for her . Did she even care? Did she ever think about their friendship? A tear ran down his thin face, but he brushed it away angrily.

A fifth year Rabastan came out of a classroom with a girl on each arm.
"Hello Sev." He beamed and escorted the third years' into the Hall.
Good thing he was too distracted to notice something was wrong or Snape would have seriously injured him. He sighed and got up. He was letting James get to him... He smiled ruefully as he started back towards the noisy Hall. He would get even with James soon. Very soon.

Minerva once again steeled her nerves which was a remarkable feat in itself as there was little that ever got under her skin. Now, it seemed, faced with a tired and all together very unnerving sight of the headmaster had her steel nerves dissolving like acid was poured onto them. Yes, Minerva McGonagall was a softy when it came to her friends and their health.

With that in mind she decided to prolong the talk of her pay check and instead focus on something that would most certainly brighten her old friend and mentor's day. School. Namely the beginning of it and new students.

"Do not worry about it Professor. You had other things on your plate," she said in her short tone, although it held no anger or annoyance. She stepped quickly onto the stairwell and followed him up, giving a few small nods to the headmasters who were awake while the man removed his travel cloak.

The tight line of her lips curved into a small smile. "I had simply come up to see if you were ready to begin the ceremonies? The new students are most anxious to be sorted," she said in a matter of fact manner, while glaring at a small strand of hair that had fallen out of the sharp confines of the black bun.

She waved her wand and the offending hair returned itself to its previous position, and the Transfiguration professor decided that she needed to design her own charm for keeping hair in place. The one she had used from Madame Pomfrey was decidedly lacking. Not that she was surprised. The woman's hair was not always perfectly in place, but then again, she did not want it like that.

[I thought I'd posted on this already. :eyeroll:]

As usual, the Great Hall was decorated with a few thousand suspended candles and the odd ghostly presence. Students spilled into the place, each heading for their own House table without much regard for those around them, until a third-year Ravenclaw boy walked straight through the Grey Lady. Those around him laughed, and dodged the irritated ghost who floated away to talk to someone would wouldn't so blindly walk through her.

A few teachers bustled about, maintaining some semblance of order. Automatically Lily's eyes searched the mass of green-speckled black for a familiar face, but was disappointed when she saw Snape was missing. The smile that lit her face faded a little, but it was only the first night and there was sure to be time to find him later.
Now, there were so many students cramming themselves into the Hall that Lily and Andrea had to chose between moving and being plowed over. The sudden rush gave her a buzz, and she laughed.

"Uh oh," Andrea was glancing over Lily's shoulder, at something she had apparently missed, with a faint trace of a lingering smile on her face. "You have a stalker. Seven o'clock." She turned back to face Lily with a sly grin.
"Three guesses, but you'll only need one."
Sometimes, she felt being a redhead meant she was far too easily recognized. Among a sea of brown, black and blonde she stuck out life a sore thumb. No-one could say she was a hard target to follow.

Spinning around slightly, she identified James Potter and his friends hovering nearby. As Andie had pointed out, he was staring at her and clearly not paying any attention to anyone else. She raised a questioning eyebrow, before calling to him.
"Hey, Potter, have you lost something?"
Andrea sniggered somewhere behind her, and Lily had to fight to keep her face straight; an attempt that failed miserably. There was a muffled thud and a mocking complaint as Lily's hand made swift contact with her friend's arm. It took all her self control not to start laughing.

The Headmaster smiled kindly at McGonagall and watched her from behind his half-moon spectacles; he suddenly looked years and years younger. Dumbledore sensed that this was not the main reason to which he owed the visit of the deputy-Headmaster, but he say anything about this suspicion.

"Yes, yes" The old man answered vividly and with a wave of his wand he moved the Sorting Hat from its shelf into the hands of McGonagall. "I'm ready."

"After you.." he gestured to the door which led to the staircase. "We shouldn't let those eager young minds wait too long shouldn't we?" He chuckled. "This will be an interesting year Minerva. Dark times lie ahead.. We will be tested to the best of our abilities. But who knows.. maybe on some of these young minds our future will depend."

This was all said in a very airy manner of speaking. As if the Headmaster was just chit-chatting about the weather or what dish was to be served for dinner. But these were real facts although the old wizard then could not know the how dark the times actually were to be.

------------------------------

Sirius smiled at Remus and said no more about the matter. He knew that his friend was quite reserved about his business and who was he as not to respect that?
He cheered when the doors to the Great Hall opened and slowly the mass of students moved along. He noticed that James' gaze went over all the students until it was fixed on a girl with bright red hair. Sirius grinned. First he'd thought that his friend's interest of the girl had been a short infatuation but later he'd realised it was much more than that.

"Hey, Potter, have you lost something?" Lily Evans had discovered the staring James as well.

"Hey Evans!" Sirius called cheerfull. "I think James has missed you over the summer.." He threw her a mischievious grin and laughed at his friend.
