Haha, it certainly worked! I went with the Two Towers soundtrack, "Foundations of Stone" and "The Taming of Smeagol." I'll keep your other suggestions in mind for next time I need them.

Arabella: the music is one of the main things I go to. But I don't just use LotR soundtrack. There's also PotC, and the Transformers Scores are good too. But what I do is have several playlists, each filled with music of a different mood. And depending on the mood of the rpg, I play the corresponding playlist. It helps me get into the mood of the character.
Other times, I listen to music, and sit and play a game that doesn't take much brain power while I sit and think about what I should post. (for me that would be Majong Titans, Minesweeper, Sudoku, or Spider Solitair) Sometimes I stop several times while posting and think it out before typing it out. But this might only work for me since I've never heard of anyone else suggesting it.
Also, I like to browse through fantasy related pics, especially on deviantart.

I agree that playing mindless games gets your mind on track. It's also helpful when you write your own stories. I have found that RPing has helped me immensely with my own stories. I have never tried listening to the scores from the movies/tv shows/ect that I'm RPing for.

When I'm going to be writing for a long time, I listen to something that fades into the background, like soundtracks or certain Enya songs. If I'm writing something more intense or for a shorter period of time, I listen to something with more clear lyrics or just something I enjoy hearing. The Lord of the Rings Musical has some great songs for getting into the right mood in a LotR RPG, too. You can find lots of songs from it on Youtube.

Just popped in to ask a question: how would people feel about a thread concentrating on canon characters? I'm not talking about a roleplay as such, just more of a place for practicing oneshots and get constructive criticism. I know I'm totally paranoid about taking canon characters outside of their predefined boundaries and I think this would be fun. Could maybe set up a few similar contests too.

Darkheart: I think that would be an absolute fantastic idea! Plus, it'll really help people with their writing skills and what they feel they need to work on!

That would be a pretty good idea, I believe. The only thing is, which section would it be in? In my opinion it would probably be best in the Help and Ideas section since it's more of a 'help' with cannon characters and not actually roleplaying. Also, we would probably want someone who can come up with quick scenarios so the person who wants the feedback can plug their character in without having to establish the setting, making it easier for the player to concentrate on the actual cannon character as well as the people giving the advice have a better time with how the player plays the character.
Also, I have something of another idea. We already have a Help and Advice thread, as well as this class. But what if we had a kind of 'Quick Tips Reference' thread. This would NOT be the kind of thread where someone goes and asks a question to get a tip. We already have that going on here in the Roleplaying Class 101. Call it something of a rule board, or FAQ for roleplaying. They'd be "more like guidelines than actual rules". I can already list off several things from my experiences alone.

So I am interested in RPing, but honestly it looks like most of the RPs are dead, and I have limited experience anyhow... But is there one I could join to practice/test the waters?

There might not be one active, cut are more than welcome to make you. Or you could ask someone to rp with you, and maybe start one that's meant for those two people, but have room for others to jump in if you'd like. Honestly with roleplaying you really can't test waters, you have to just jump in. But it's a lot of fun and not scary at all.

Ah, the question of grammar and spelling. There are actually several tips I can give you pertaining to this. 1) Practice makes perfect. Over the years I've found the more and write/type, the better my grammar and spelling gets. I have never stopped improving. 2) Be attentive and proof read. When you're done with a post go back through and re-read it, check for typos and grammatical and spelling errors yourself. You might be surprised what a slip of the finger can do that you missed while you typed and a single typo can cause quite a bit of confusion. 3) Know the difference. If you're not sure, look them up, but these are a grammar nazi's worst nightmare. Know the difference between they're, there, and their. You're, your. It's, its. Then, and than. Though mistakes with these are easily looked over, even by others, it's impressive to see them in the proper context. 4) Spell check! This is one of the MOST useful tools a forum RPer can have. Not sure if a word is spelt correctly? Check it. Google Chrome has built in spell check. I get a red dotted line under words spelt wrong in the browser window. Stick your post into Microsoft Word before posting it to see if there are any mistakes. Or, if you have neither of those available, there are plenty of sites out there that are free online spell checkers. 5) Keep a thesaurus and dictionary handy. Whether it's good old-fashioned ink and paper, or reference.com, or a program built onto your computer. It is always handy to have one close by. Learn a new word, grow your articulation. You might start to impress people. Hope this helps
