Aragorn recieving Andúril in the third movie also helps building up the thrill and excitement for the last battle. The grand finale.. the all or nothing for our heroes.
And then I can't help thinking of Elrond as a helper or assistant to the hero in accomplishing his last task before he can get his final reward. Very much inspired by fairytales in which the hero must accomplish a set number of tasks and encounter evil and dangerous opponants on his way in order to be able to recieve the award in the end (usually the princess). This is an epic tale and both Tolkien and PJ draw on the symbols of fairytales, though in different ways.
