I think part of it has to do with Goldberry, since she's supposed to be so beautiful, and it's almost like he's just a little old man marrying her...lol, sounds like Gimli and Galadriel, even they don't get married.
That's exactly how I feel!!! Except that I don't like his songs very much I used to not like him at all actually but now I'm starting to feel differently. He's such a complex character. We don't know what he is or where he came from. He bugged be at first but...not as much anymore. Now I wonder about him more then anything. He's strange that's for sure.

U don't have an undecided option to ur poll! Cuz for me...I like him cuz he seems like a good guy and he IS intresting, but he was just soo ... RANDOM! like he just appears out of nowhere, then you never see him again? I don't know I think Tolkien just added him in to make the story..which was getting darker and darker..a little lighter. Because as Sam wisely states in TTT
"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something, even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back, only they didn't. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something."
Tolkien needed to show his readers something to hold on to, no matter how dark the books got, there WOULD be good in the end.

I like his randomness!
It's what keeps some people I know to keep on reading the books since they get bored easily.

Hehe, randomness...
I do like his songs, even if they aren't really of the usual LotR sort. I like the rhythm, which may sound weird...but I look out for rhythms!

Tolien does that a lot, if anyone has read his other works you'll notice that

Hey, everyone! I'm new here, but I hope you don't mind if I give my two cents worth...
Tom I did not find annoying, per say. I actually thoroughly enjoyed his character - a bit mysterious, a bit Jack O'Green, a bit Tolkien himself. It was a truly lovely part of the book. But ENITRELY out of place in the LotR trilogy. My theory is that Tolkien was still in what I call his "Hobbit-mood" - meaning that he had been writing children's books, full of delightful, rambling adventures of this sort. But neither Tom nor that entire episode of the book had ANYTHING to do with the plot. So Mr. Bombadil is out of context, and that's why I never really like him... for what it's worth...

Since reading The Silmarillion, I MIGHT be able to appreciate Tom next time round... maybe because I understand more about the Maia (which I am convinced that he and Goldberry are) and the truth about the forests... how Yavanna and Iluvatar put the protectors of the forests there- the Ents etc...

I've read the book only once (fan since december ) and I must say I thought Tom was really annoying. I say the movies first and since they let him out I thought everytime: what is he doing there? what's all this? In th beginning it was funny but in the end it was a bit boring.
But maybe I like him more when I read the book again... Let's hope so...

I have to admit that Tom Bombadil was annoying in a few ways... However, he ended up being an overall good character. I liked him.

Sure!! The more people share their opinions the more interesting. Don't hesitate to join the discussion on A-U
This is an interesting theory and I sort of agree with it. The story gets darker and darker as they move along and the Shadow gets more hold of Middle-earth but I don't know exactly how Tolkien wrote the books.
Serethiel, I think it's true that their are creatures as old as the world to protecter of nature...like there were evil creatures from the beginning of time (like Ungoliant). And they could very well be Maiar...

Good point Pan. Now that I think about it, Tom did seem to pop up when the story seemed a little dark, so maybe Tolkien put him in just to bring light tp the story. Excellent points.........

For me too, there was always something about Tom Bombadil... I don't know for sure, but I don't think I liked the fact that he was portrayed as being so powerful and immune to the ring but couldn't help with it's destruction with the cop out that he couldn't leave the borders of his own land.
I agree he stands out as an odd addition to the story considering his part was so small but I didn't think he was boring at all.

That is odd, I wonder what his purpose in the story is then

Bringing light to the story when the hobbits were stuck in darkness in the forest. That is my theory of why Tolkien bothered to put him in the book.
