When Elves perish there Fea (spirits) go to the Halls of Mandos, there to await reincarnation. Elves which have done much evil in there lives may have to wait very long to be reincarnated or may never be at all.
Feanor is an example of this. His spirit was never reincarnated and never set free until the Last battle at the End of the World (the Dagor Dagorath), when the Silmarils were recovered from the air, sea and earth, and then Feanor broke them open and gave the light back to Yavanna who made the Two trees again.
When Men die there spirits pass through the Halls of Mandos and then out of the Wolrd to none but Eru knows where.
When Dwarves die there spirits go into a seperate chamber in the Halls of Mandos, there they wait until the last battle and the Day of Doom, which, when finished, they will aid Aule in the remaking of the world (for Melkor to be destroyed you must destroy Arda).

Thank you Lord of all, this finally answers my question concerning an Elf's death. If the Elves are reincarnated, then couldn't Glorfindel from the Silmarillion be the same Glorfindel in FotR?

Ah, thanks for clearing that up. I didn't exactly register the fact at the time I read it.

Well, I'm pretty sure, Aerlinn, though not 100%, that Tolkien specifically stated that Glorfindel of Gondolin was the same as Glorfindel of Rivendell.

There is already a topic about Glorfindel of gondonlin= Glordfindel of Rivendell, so, just suggesting that thats where we take it.
Just so the mods don't come and tell us all to get on topic.

Aerlinn wrote: Us? You weren't even discussing this ...Are you catching somekind of Mod infection, Lam-Lam? But I promise to be good and stay on topic now... Though...I think there's not much left to say about this anyway...Gandalf, being a Maia, lived forever of course. And I don't even think we should be talking about time anyway, since Gandalf existed before time really existed So basically, I agree with that which has been said before
I was considering posting, but I saw the number of pages, and of course, knew that it would have been wrapped up on the original topic by now. But I saw the direction and just thought Id shuffle it out of Nontopic waters :P
If you want a discussion that has been goiung for muchos time, then go for the "Do Blarogs have wings?" thread.
That was my first thread I posted in
