Post subject:  Aragorn and Anduril
Hey, i was just wondering, it says in the books that Aragorn has a broken sword that he carries with him, though it doesn't say what it's name is. Is that broken sword Anduin, or the Shards or Narsil as they're called in the movie? And does he fight with the broken sword or does he have another one?

i'm still reading the books for the first time, so if possible, try not to say spoilers, but obviously if it's unavoidable, go ahead.

I believe that in the book he is supposed to be carrying Anduril ... but in the movie, he's carrying some other sword ;)

In the book, when he first meets the hobbits he has the shards of Narsil. When they get to Rivendell the sword is reforged and he carries Anduril for the rest of the story.

In the movieshe carries a different sword until mid way through the third film, when Elrond delivers Anduril. *spits at PJ for making such a horrendous (sp?) mistake*

Yeah that was a huge change that PJ made! I was so confused when Elrond brough Andúril to Aragorn in the third movie ... I'd thought the one that he'd been carrying all along was Andúril... :confused:

Yes, especially with all the fights, when he looks like he's blessing the sword or something. I always thought it was Andruil because...well, that's what Aragorn has!

Aye that scene was one of the most confusing scenes in the whole trilogy. Instead of just letting Aragorn have it at Rivendell, PJ decided to have the 3rd most important elf in Middle-Earth travel hundreds of miles, alone, carrying one of the most valuable weapons in Middle-Earth :duh:

agreed. like in the book, Aragorn sort of shows off with it when they go to Rohan. :confuzzled:

But... although they did change it, it was still nice. :)

Well, I think PJ wanted to bring Aragorn and Arwen's story a little more depth in the movies, hence why they filmed Arwen fighting at Helm's Deep :duh: So I think PJ wanted to have a nice moment where Elrond kind of blesses Aragorn before the big battle, as well as keeping the audience reminded of the love story. That's my take :P

I know! It was bad enough they brought Haldir and the Elves to Helms Deep, and then killed Haldir! But that is getting us off topic :P

I liked how they made it something special in the movies; Aragorn recieving Anduril from Elrond before the last battle.
In the books it was more like a detail, Aragorn carried an important sword that was broken while leading the hobbits to Rivendell and then poof when they set out on the mission.. quest.. thing, the sword is reforged and all of a sudden it becomes crucially important and revered.

Giving the sword to Aragorn in the third movie really symbolised the acceptance of his fate. Aragorn went on a journey throughout the books [and the movies]. I am referring to his journey to find himself, to find where his place in life was. At first he did not want to believe that he was Isildur's hier, but as time went on he became more accepting of his role by realising that he is his own person, not Isildur himself.
This made the reforging and giving or the sword all the more important and special.

I'd have to agree with that. I don't know why PJ waited so long to have Aragorn received Anduril, when it was such an obvious departure from the book.
The sword he carries for most of the movies is not named, at least not to my knowledge.
