I really missed seeing that bit in the movie. What was all this about coming back to find the Shire perfectly unchanged? I realize there were time restraints and everything, but I think Tolkien was definitely making a point with that section. Eventhough Frodo had destroyed the Ring, much of the evil would take a long time to totally leave, and for everything to go back to normal. The devestation caused by the War of the Ring cannot be immediately fixed. And I think another important point was that the evil and destruction had reached all the way to the beautiful, perfect, happy Shire that was before all but cut off from the rest of the world.

Yeah, I liked "The Scourging of the Shire" chapter, too, because it shows that the hobbits learn to fight for themselves, and Frodo, Sam, Merry, and Pippin become respected for leading them in the rebellion, not scorned for having an adventure.

I've been wondering that too. I could've been that he intended to put it in the movie, or he might have put it in as a secret between him and the LOTR book fans. But, I think he must have put it in to make it quite clear that the whole world would be taken over if Frodo failed, which, would be pretty obvious to most who think that.

Yes.. I think this is where Frodo realizes the consequences for the entire world if he fails in his quest. The same realization Merry and Pippin finally come to understand at the Enting.
The more I think of it, I think I can forgive PJ for not including the Scouring in the movie... there are other things I'd rather scold him for, lol :P

Same here, Ea. Like.....Faramir in the Theatrical version of TTT.:annoyed:

Or the Elves at Helm's Deep.

Or Gandalf vs. The Witch-king.

Or the Mouth of Sauron

Or the tons and tons and tons of skulls in the Paths of the Dead Extended scene.

Agreed, Aerandir... and I was about to mention it, but then I realized this is the book section!
Also poor PJ has already been frowned upon so many times by now!! :P

Lol....that didn't occur to me, either. It is fun to frown at PJ, though. Stress relieving.

I have another thing to frown at him about--he refuses to film The Hobbit with New Line until he gets paid whatever extra he feels is owed to him from LotR.

The Mouth of Sauron was in the book, though Aragorn didn't wack off his head. And you never really know what went on in the Paths of the Dead, so there could have been skulls.

Actually, we do know what happened in the Paths of the Dead--Tolkien wrote it out from Gimli's perspective.

As for the Mouth of Sauron, PJ ruined that scene for me. I thought it was one of the absolute coolest parts in the entire book, and one of the absolute worst parts (it's tied with Gandalf vs. Witch-king) in the movie.

Agreed, it was absolutely not necessary to make the Mouth of Sauron such an annoying, bad-breathed, slobbering, ill-worded, wisping er... beast... but anyway this is still a book thread and a birthday-party thread, so... ;-)

Yeah. I agree with you 100%, but we're getting off-topic.

What'd you think of the "Special" banquet being for a small number--144 guests?

Do you mean whether it was unfair that Bilbo wanted to exclude the rest of his guests or are you aiming at the special number of 144? Or something completely different..? Sorry, my mind just slipped of your wave-length for a moment...

Yeah, me too. I'm afraid I don't know what you're implying.

Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. Sorry.

I hated that. I would have liked it if Tolkien had just told it in a normal chapter.

I rather enjoyed it, myself. :D

I was referring at the 'small' number being 144 people. It kind of throws the size of the party into perspective. It must have been huge. :)

Bilbo did want it to be spectacular and all of Hobbiton was basically there, but you're right it must have been huge. I always saw it as a great town celebration. But I also had the impression that hobbit parties usually are quite big, because their extended family relations - as well as festivity! - are so important to them, so I pictured tons of people!! :P

Ohh, a little book quote:
Quote:
Bilbo Baggins called it a party, but it was really a variety of entertainments rolled into one. Practically everybody living near was invited. A very few were overlooked by accident, but as they turned up all the same, that did not matter

I wish I could have been there. It was probably really fun!
