Yeah, it probably was, even if the average hobbit does get on my nerves.
....the food must have rocked.

Aerandir, you er.. hobbit-bashing person!
I don't think it's the hobbits' fault they happened to settle down in the quietest place on Middle-earth. The smaller the threats and obstacles to everyday life, the easier it becomes to complain about nothing.. or put in other words, minor nuisances grows bigger because the lack of bigger problems to compare it with...

I admit. I'm a hobbit-bashing person.
....you see, it wasn't exactly the calmest place in Middle-earth when they settled--the efforts of the Dúnedain were the reason it was calm, and at that time, it wasn't so calm.

Very true. But, the hobbits did hold their own in the days of the Northern kingdom. They fought orcs, and even sent some of their braver folk to the Northern king's aid.

Actually it never says that they themselves fought orcs--it only says that "they claim to have sent a band of archers" to the King's aid or whatnot.
The only time it mentions that they fight orcs, I think, is the first battle of the Shire.

Still, they fought orcs. (And invented golf at the same time!)

But that doesn't make me like them any more. I still think they're annoying.

I was referring to the later days of the Third Age around the time of The Hobbit and LotR. At that time the hobbits had been safe in the Shire for long and they had developed their small peculiarities...
Well, that served only to explain my previous post, not to convert your hobbit-hating-gene. If that will ever be my mission, we should continue the discussion in the other threads where you are already discussing it

What you said was "I don't think it was the hobbits' fault that they happened to settle down in the quietest place in Middle-earth." That's kind of misleading if you're referring to a time long after they actually settled in the Shire.
Still, we probably should move this discussion to "Some People Hate Hobbits!" or whatever the thread is.

Hmph.
I don't think I can't show any understanding for those little furry-footed annoyances, I simply choose not to.

Are you hmph-ing me? *frowns*
Well, I might challenge you properly in one of the love/hate hobbit threads one day, seems this is where we could have a real discussion !
Back to another question concerning Bilbo's Party. Remind me again why the number of 144 guests were chosen for the special pavilion. Did it have something to do with Bilbo's 111th years birthday and Frodo's 33 years? I remember it was referring to the umm.. special measurement of the Shire *too lazy to get the book again to look it up*

One-hundred and forty-four is equal to One Gross in Shire terms. And I think it does have something to do with Bilbo's 111 and Frodo's 33, too.

Ohh yeah one Gross.. which was considered not so nice and equal to twelve dozen. Hmmm I believe I read something else about the number, but it might have been Bilbo's and Frodo's birthdays...

I've come upon an interesting conversation! I would have loved to gone. Like Aerandir said, the food must have looked good!

Hobbits are my favorite race, even above the elves. I wish I was one! I would have loved to be at Bilbo's party, with all the good food and fun Irish dancing music.
