I've heard on several accounts that Hobbits can not swim. I know that Frodo's parents drowned, but that might have been by accident. Anyway, if this accusation true?

yep, agrees with Mornie Utulie. According to the books, some who live near the river Brandywine boat and swim, though most think it's a frivolous and even dangerous pastime. As many from Hobbiton felt, it was a silly notion for Frodo's parents to be messing about in a boat and reckless of them...so it's not a popular hobby. :)

I'd agree with Tin.
There is written proof that some hobbits did use boats, and were used to the water, but the vast majority ooked upon water with great dread.

Aye, like has already been said, most hobbits weren't accustomed to water, though the hobbits living close to the Brandywine River and in the Brandybuck area were used to water - but after all the Brandybuck's were looked upon as being a bit queer to some!!
Sam hated being on the water when the Fellowship travelled on Anduin, whereas Merry didn't have a problem with it at all and even knew how to handle a boat.

Also even though they weren't exactly hobbits, but might have been related, the people Sméagol belonged to, were said to live close to the rivers and they could swim.

I know that the Tooks and Brandybucks near the Brandywyne river go in boats often, but I don't know about swimming.

Hobbits evolved from men. And guess what... If I wasn't thought (en?) how to swim, I couldn't do it either by nature. So most likely some hobbits learned how to swim, while others didn't.

Deagol could obviously swim and Sam couldn't. But it is also written that Deagol is another kind of hobbit then Sam. So perhaps the kind of hobbit we speak of matters also. So maybe some kind of hobbits could have been more eiger to learn then others, I think.

I didn't know that...when how, why??? And how come hobbits are so much smaller than men? Sorry, for all the questions, but this information is new to me.

A bit off topic perhaps, but since the great amount of request for explanation, I'll try to explain the evolution of Hobbits as good as I can.

When men flee from the south (because of Melkor) a looooong time ago, they were devided into 3 groups:

- The first group, the men who were tired of running and strong enough to defend theirselves against the enemy, founded Gondor. They were tall and needed a place to stay so they could feed themselves more easily.

- The second group, the men on horseback, could travel much further and founded Rohan, further up North (in these days those countries didn't exist yet, ofcourse)

- And the Third group, were men that had great endurance! They were also the smallest men, so they didn't need much food to travel. They evolved even smaller for this reason, and got big feet from travelling all the time. They settled far away from the others, in the far North.

(Hobbits evolved even further and got divided into different kinds of hobbits, but that's a whole different story...)

Juicy detail: Have you read the Hobbit? If so you might recall Gandalf sended the dwarves to Bilbo. Gandalf knew well about the hobbits' durability by evolution, and although long forgotten by the hobbits themselves, Bilbo proved to very fit indeed to do the job.
