I'm really confused you know, it's probably something obvious that I'm missing. But why did Sauron need the ring? He made it so techniqually it can't be any more powerful than him right? I suppose the reason he made it was so that he could command the other races whilst they're wearing their rings right? Does anyone know the answer it's kinda confusing me.

Oh no please discuss it out in the open :bounce:

I also wonder why he was soooo attached to that ring and why Sauron got destroyed when the ring was and why he couldn't exist without it...

He couldn't take physical, dangerous form again after it was destroyed because he put a ton of his power into it, and when it was destroyed, he lost his connection to that power, and couldn't ever take a physical shape again, or even do anything to harm someone.

But yeah, Sauron made the Ring as a means of controlling the other rings, or rather, those who had the other rings.

Originally Sauron forged the One Ring to dominate the other Rings of Power:
One ring to rule them all... and in the darkness bind them

However, in the Third Age he also needed the Ring for mere survival. He own existance depended on it. Like Aerandir says, Sauron put much of his own life force and power into the Ring. He could not die as long as the Ring existed - and I'm quite sure he didn't plan on loosing his Preciousss!!

So the Ring had to be destroyed in order to defeat Sauron. If the Ring were used by another, even for the good, it would eventually turn evil because of the... bad karma(!) Sauron poured into the Ring. If Galadriel had taken the Ring, she would have become a Dark Queen because the Ring would answer to Sauron only and could not be used for the good.

Thank you both for clearing that up! :)
Perhaps you two masterbrains can also help us out on this one.. Why was it that Frodo didn't seem to be affected very much by the rings' bad karma, while others (just look at Smeagol) turned evil in a split second after only a glance on the ring?
I know Frodo became a little hostile towards the end, but that took a significant while longer then it did compared to others.

As for that, I think that the susceptibility to the Ring's power depended on your strength of will, and your desires. For Frodo, I don't think he desired to rule the world or anything - he was just a hobbit of the Shire, who wanted to live a peaceful life, and it took a long while for the Ring to make the lure of power seem appealing to him. Boromir, for instance, was a very warlike man, a prince, in a way, who very much desired power and recognition - that's why he fell far more easily than Frodo.

That's just my opinion, though.

Aerandir, you are quite right! On both counts. He made the ring to dominate the other races on middle-earth, using it to control their rings!

And the reason Frodo wasn't quickly affected by the ring was because he did not want power, only to go back to living quietly in the Shire.

That's also the reason Sam didn't fall victim to the rings suceptability. He, like many hobbits, only wanted "peace and quiet and good tilled earth" to quote Bilbo.

Smeagol fell for the ring much quicker; Tolkien tells us that he had a bit of a nasty streak in him to begin with. The ring just brought all that out.

Remember, Faramir was also able to resist the ring. (After all, he didn't take Frodo to Osgiliath!) He didn't desire glory or fighting or ruling. He loved beauty, and the city of Minas Arnor as of old. The ring held no promise for him.

Thanks for replying, I thought it was so that he could control all the other races. To me it just seemed like a pretty stupid idea you know? He had enough power on his own to be an evil ruler... I think and yet he put all his eggs in one basket by creating the ring. Then again I suppose he just never thought that anyone would figure out how to destroy him.

I can't find the answers on my own all my books have been in storage for the past two years :annoyed2:

Sauron needed the ring so that he could regain power over Mordor.

The ring was part of Sauron, it was Sauron's soul. He needed only this ring to cover all the land of middle-earth in a second darkness. That's why he sought it so much.

But it does make a good story line, right!! :P
Actually, the idea is good. A physical form is after all easier to hurt in battle, whereas a small object like a ring, which can only be destroyed in one place on earth should be a lot safer, because it's not likely to happen.

But why did it have to be a ring? (Sorry if I'm being difficult or irrational :-D )
