I think it's brilliant that Tolkien ingeniously created a place of tranquility and hobbits, small folk who we as humans would inspire to be in order to live there humble cozy and amazingly brilliant lifestyles!

Constrastingly places such as Mordor and other places of evil really bring out the fact that the Shire is such an amazing place to inhabit, beautiful surroundings, homely, friendly people, and the home to Middle-Earth's finest heros! Don't you agree?

I like the idea of the Shire, so I agree partly, but I don't agree with the "we as humans would aspire to be in order to live their humble, cozy, and amazingly brilliant lifestyles!" part--personally, I don't aspire to be a Hobbit.

To be honest, the average Hobbit gets on my nerves. Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin, and the Farmers Cotton and Maggot are alright, but all the others (well, Bilbo's okay too) get on my nerves, mostly because they take the tranquility of the Shire for granted, ignoring the labors of those who keep its borders safe.

So, I like the Shire, I just don't like the Hobbits.

I would love to be a hobbit and live in the Shire... I'm that kind of person... I like to have adventure every now and then, however.

But yes, I do agree with you, Frodos-Guide!

I really like Shire but some things shouldn't be taken for granted. I mean Hobbits are very nice but they are, I don't know the exact word but it might be self-sufficient. I mean they think as long as there is no harm or danger to Shire, they don't have to worry. Pardon me for saying this but I think that even if danger was near, they wouldn't be able to do much. *I can almost see, I have angered many people.*

to be fair, they're not really ignoring the labour of the rangers - they simply don't know about it because the rangers keep themselves secret, quietly protecting the shire and keeping the knowledge of any danger from the hobbits. the rangers don't want to be known, so how can the hobbits know about them?

I see where you are all coming from with the view that Hobbit's take things for granted. What i meant through the aspiring to be like hobbits was the lifestyle, not the attitude. It's something i can recall Peter Jackson saying and I belive it is one of the reasond Tolkien created hobbits. They live the lifestyle maybe not all, but many of us would seek. To eat, drink be merry and not have much of a care in the world. Also not doing great amounts of labouring and being able to socialise!

I must say i do understand why many hobbits come across as 'annoying' and in some senses i agree but i have to say they are generally friendly creatures and posess great qualities such as fantastic hospitality skills and they are very sociable. Frodo for example, a hero possessing the quality to be able to carry the ring and the will power needed to overcome the power through the help of another fantastic hobbit Samwise gamgee. Like all races, there will always be one or two annoying characters...you can't expect everyone to be perfect, it just adds to the reality of the race of Hobbits i think! :)

Well, I also like the Shire as a place and I like the Hobbits too, even though they are ignorant of most things that happen in the world.
But, do you think the Shire would be such a nice place if its inhabitants were different?
I think the only reason why the Shire is the why it is, is because of the Hobbits who keep it that way.

At least, that's what I think, I see there are some others with another opinion.

If the Hobbits didn't take their peace for granted, then they would be okay, but until then (and probably then too), I'd rather stay in Rivendell, Mithlond, or Lothlorien.

eowyn, being most of the way through The Fellowship of the Ring once again, this is fresh on my mind: at one point, Tolkien mentions that "the hobbits slowly forgot that the labours of others made their peace possible..." etc. So at one point they did know, and then they forgot about it.

Yes, i see the view that the fact that the hobbits were unable to acknowledge the fact that the others had laboured to make this land a possibility, but don't we always get people on earth like that? People who take our world for granted?

I must still say through this, Tolkien adds to the reality of Hobbits, and i must say the Bagginses, my hat goes off to you, and the tooks and Brandybucks and the Gamgees, and most other hobbit families too. I totally agree with Brynhild. The Shire would not be the shire without hobbits.

I must say i would much rather inhabit the shire than any other place in middle-earth...especially if elijah wood was really Frodo .... :blush:

Yes, we do have people on Earth who take peace for granted, and they annoy me just like hobbits.

The Shire would still be the Shire even without the Hobbits, for me, I think. I think of the Shire as a region on a map, and I would enjoy it just as much without the hobbits--they'd get on my nerves if I went to an inn of theirs or something.

Still i must disagree. The hobbits show hospitality and are very friendly creatures. Without them the whole atmosphere of the shire would be different.

I think Tolkien created a very comfortable living place when he created The Shire. It seems like a calm place and it would be good to get away from the life of war. But, the fact that Hobbits don't know that much about life outside of The Shire, it would seem boring to be deprived of the adventure and the other races of the world. Plus, while the Hobbits are sitting at The Green Dragon smoking pipeweed, gulping ale after ale, and resting after a hard day's work, they have no idea what evil is brewing in the land of Mordor or even quite closer than that. Of course they know of the "Big Folk" and elves and dwarves, but they seem like goldfish stuck in their fish tank; they don't know what would happen if they were to wander outside of the borders of their comfort area.
