I always thought this was one of the strangest arguments, so let's carry it on...

For reference, the orginal thread is http://tevildiel.proboards21.com/index. ... 492&page=1

I think Balrog (Morgoth?) has wings, but anyone is free to oppose that :)

I'm going to say what I said last time: I think of a balrog is basically a huge shadow (and some flames), and shadows and stretch and change, so a balrog can. I think when it wanted to appear intimidating, like it wanted to with Gandalf challenging him. But they weren't actual "wings" they were just shadows of wings. So he couldn't fly back up when he went down with Gandalf.

I think it has wings, but they're not strong enough to support its body, so it can't use them. I know that it sounds weird to compare a Balrog to an ostrich or a penguin, but it might be that situation?

Or a dodo...
Yes, I agree. Having wings of shadow and flame is a nice though, really...

A good movie maker can show a being on big screen and still make the fans debate on whether or not a creature as wings or not...

PJ is a good movie maker.

Atleast, until the beginning of Two Towers.

Yeah, I still hold to what I said on the old thread. I don't think Balrogs have wings. Tolkien uses similes a lot in his books, when he for instance says that 'They were like two big wings.'. Then later Tolkien says 'His two wings spread across wall to wall.' So it's as if Tolkien either forgot to put the simile in, or he just expects us to know he isn't talking about real wings. Or another theory, maybe he did this on purpose, just so people who looked close enough would start discussions exactly like this one to figure out the true meaning behind it all.

And yes, Kit, right up till The Two Towers lol.

Hum, well I'd like to believe that Balrogs DO have wings. So I'll stick with that.

I'd say that they have "wings" that are just kind of formed of shadow and flame. I mean, I believe in The Silmarillion there's a mention of Morgoth calling the balrogs and that they came with "winged speed" or something, but if the wings were real and could support the balrogs, why didn't the FotR balrog fly up from the chasm? Or fly over the bridge to attack the rest of the Fellowship?

I think Gandalf had more power over it than he seemed to. Perhaps besides battling it to the death, he had a sort of Maiar grip on it, you know?

That's a good theory. I never thought about that. If the Balrog did infact have wings, maybe that's the reason it couldn't fly back up, because Gandalf had a hold on it. But eh, I still think Balrogs don't have wings.

i'll say what i said in the old thread:

*gets book and clears throat* it does say, and I quote:

"...and the shadow about it reached out like two vast wings." so thats up everyone's imagination if they are actual wings or only shadows like wings
