Why didn't the Black Riders have bows, ay? It would make more sense to shoot Frodo at a distance instead of riding up to him, be seen, and get drenched! They just HAD to try out those fancy Morgul blades...
Just a thought! Discuss, rant, etc.

That's what I don't like about Sauron... he is as stupid and gullible as he is evil and powerful. Who cares about looks?

The morgul knife was no ordinary knife. Sauron had carefully poisoned it, remember? They probably did not want to take the time to poison the tip of an arrow. They were in haste. Besides, I'll bet the nazgul do not know how to shoot with a bow.

^true.wraiths probably dont have very good aim anyway.and i think it has more effect when theres a black rider chasing u with a big shiny cruel sword than trying to shoot at u with bows and arrows.just my thoughts.

well so is it,Nazgul follows only the ring I think so they are verry dumb lol.The dark servants of Sauron (but the best is when Aragorn throws a torch in ones head haha). However its written that they dont use bows so that the lil hobits can run away and the story becomes more interesting.

^yeah, if they did that the movie would be considerably shorter and filed under the "Comedies" at the video store.

The Nazguls can't shoot with a bow because they CAN'T SEE.They can only "sniff".They are using the horses to see, remember.

Wellllllllllll it doesn't take too long to poison arrowheads
And I'm pretty sure that anyone in Middle-earth who could wield a weapon could learn to shoot with a bow...
.............. if they could see

Did you see those snazzy gloves the Ringwraiths were wearing in the movie? How would they hold a bow with spikes on their hands left, right, and center?

Their gauntlets were more scaly than spiky... they were scaly so that the Nazgûl could move their hands properly. If they were able to wield their swords with so much control and without the gauntlets interfering, I don't think archery would be much of a problem... if they could see.

^shh...we can pretend, can't we?
Why would they have to shoot Frodo anyway? They were only riding the horses when Frodo was on Glorfindel's horse back to Rivendell--and that was after they had already stabbed him. They were chasing him to get the Ring. If they shot him, he wouldn't nessecarilly fall off the horse. And if they had were trying too poison him, they'd be aiming at his heart, right? Arrows wouldn't really help if they couldn't get their horses fast enough to get in front of him and turn him into a wraith-like...guy...person...thing.

But the front isn't the only way to get to the heart. It can also be breached from the back... And I do remember reading that passage in FotR that the wraiths can't see in the regular world, but see things through the wraith world or something like that...

First from a practical perspective then. The Ringwraiths were once kings and noblemen, and the weapon of choice for such peoples is... You've guessed it!! A sword and a knife. Second, the Ringwraiths are quite a scary bunch, as well as being invincible to most blades and weapons. Now in battle, Sauron will want to use that scariness to panic his enemy. The best place to do that is close up and the one of the best weapons to do that with is... you guessed it again ! A sword or a knife. Also, as someone said here before, a Ringwraith has quite poor eyesight, which is a bit of a stumbling block to an archer , so thats not really practical. Finally, there is a maintainance point. As some history students/archers will tell you here, the type of bows that would have been utilised in middle earth have a bit of a weakness, in that in wet conditions, the string can soak up water, thus decreasing accuracy and effectiveness. Whilst a blade lacks the range, it is a far more reliable weapon in wet conditions. (See battle of Crecy as an example of this in the real world)
welcome to the Board Caranthir Oronar, hope to see you about mate
