Post subject: What would have happened if...

You know, I have always wondered what would have happened if someone else other then Frodo had taken the Ring's task
I mean sure I have always thought that Tolkien had Frodo take the Ring because he was a Hobbit, I have always tought that he did this to show how such a small person can make such a great difference but...what would have happened of Tolien had someone else take the Ring to Mordor? Many of us would think that they never would have made it but really...you guys think that?

I'll see what some people have to say first then I will say what I thnk about it. :-D
Im ebil like that :vampire: :bones:

I believe that there is a special quality to Frodo that allowed him to be able to take the Ring. I really don't think there was anyone else that could have, except maybe one or two others.

1. It had to be a hobbit.
Men-too corrupt
Wizards-Too much power
Elves and Dwarves would kill the other first.

2. With hobbits, the hobbit had to not freak about traveling outside of the Shire, but the hobbit still had to be innocent enough to not be influenced by the outside world.

"This task was appointed to you, Frodo Baggins, if you do not find a way, no one will." - Galadriel.

If someone is appointed for something, that means others see specific talents they have and believe that they can get the job done, right.

So, in essence, it had to be Frodo, or a hobbit in basically the same situation as Frodo. It wouldn't have worked any other way.

Well, this task was appointed to Frodo; that is a fact. However, as for the other points: Men-too corrupt- Not all men were corrupt; Faramir NEVER desired the Ring; Aragorn resisted it's power! Wizards-Too much power - Wizards knew that if they took the Ring then Sauron would wield it against them. Elves were leaving Middle-Earth. Dwarves concerned themselves mostly with their world and were too quick tempered to resist the power of the ring. They would and had been decieved by Sauron in the past. Hobbits, on the other hand, had been ignored by Sauron and the Ring had been safe in Biblo's keeping for many years.

In my opinion, in the Lord of the Rings as Smeagollum had stated before, the task had been for Frodo Baggins. Now he would not have been able to do the task by himself and he did have much help from Sam in particular, but ultimately the responsibility had been his. Had it not been his responsibility to carry the Ring, I would have thought that there were more suitable persons for the task. The person that comes to my mind is Sam as he did carry the Ring toward the end.

So I thought that because it had been the destiny of Frodo to do this task more than his own ability to do so, he had been chosen. Destiny is the reason he could be the one person that carried the Ring to Mount Doom.

How could I say... The task was pointed to Frodo, but he decided himself to take the Ring to Mordor at the Council of Elrond. And he decided himself to leave the Fellowship. But he also wished that these things never happened. It was his destiny, no one else could do it.

But if we mean the book, that could be something different. In the tale, things are so different than in the real world. I think that Tolkien wanted to say, that even the smallest can do his/her part and save the future. But if he had thought something else, the tale could tell about over-perfect elf or human or wizard or someone else, who just saved the world.

I prefer Frodo and his tale. :)

(I wish that someone understood. My English is not perfect.)

Wow, what if?
ultimately, no one else would have worked simply because of the moral Tolkien was trying to get across- that even the smallest or most insignificat person can make a huge difference. If it was simply an action story, it could have been anyone of the nine, but it wouldn't have had the effect or everlasting popularity that the books have had.
interesting question. It sounds like a good topic for a spoof. :-D

I agree with everything said here. And mybe not all men were corrupt, but most would have taken the ring, and Middle Earth would have fallen. Plus, hobbits were a new race, and they had to be of some importance, otherwise, they would sort of just be extras. Hobbits and the Shire were also basically untainted by the outside world until Sharkey. And if Frodo had enough bravery to volunteer, then he's obviously the right choice.

Although Frodo seemed to be able to resist most of the Ring's power; if you remember in the last movie...he would have failed if it weren't for Smeagol. When they showed the last time they tried to destroy the Ring (When lord Elrond was there), Esieldor (don't quite know how to spell it) was standing right there, and I always felt like shouting "Elrond! Push him in!" Haha. I think that Sam could have done it, really. I mean, look at all the things he did! He went with Frodo on his quest; he protected Frodo with his life; he faught Orcs and a giant spider! He even grabbed Frodo from under a nazgul's nose! Seriously...I think he made Frodo look a bit bad...haha  I still remember in the last movie, when Frodo was attacked by the spider...he dropped his phial of light AND his sword before attempting to carry on up the stairs! Sam seemed to do all the hard work I think. He could have done it! :karate:
Men-too corrupt- Not all men were corrupt; Faramir NEVER desired the Ring.
In the movies he wanted it to save Minas Tirith but not in the books.
