Elves will always be a fixation for us or for them in The Lord Of Rings, rarely seen, and only heard in tales, they can achieve things men can only dream of. With long life, the will always learn to do things a little better as they had time we have not to work on things, they taught Aragorn's race to write and the trees to talk. They came taught us and then LEFT! They may have been the 1st race but that does not make them perfect, yes they can sing etc, but there is always something more behind closed doors! Am i repeating myself??? :goofy:

Elves seem to be perfect (which surely isn't the truth because nobody's perfect...). I love them first after Hobbits. They are etheral, mysterious, wise and beautiful. I wish it was more Glorfindel and Gildor, because I liked them most after Elrond. In FotR there are very much elves, this is one of the reasons I like this part most.

I always thought elves or an elf as being somewhat like a leprechaun.
I'm glad the LOTR films changed that perspective. They are much like men, they can be corrupted but tend to lean towards the good not the evil. I like their quiet nature and "structured" society.

I don't think Elves are perfect.. far from actually. Just look at the Sil and you have dark elves, corrupted Elves and elves fighting each other and wanting to destroy other races.

But I think they are fascinating. Because they live for so long time that they are practically immortal (alright.. they are immortal!) they have room for a lot deeper feelings than men. When they are enraged.. better not be close because they can hold a grudge for centuries, when they are happy, the trees and the flowers sing with them and the very soil bend to their wisdom, when they are are sad it is a longing so deep in their hearts that it might kill them.

So I always saw elves being a lot like men but with everything exaggerated.

So maybe I see them as perfect because I didn't read Sil? I must do that some time, just didn't have chance so far.

These in FotR seems to be wise but joyful so I feel like they are singing from another planet.

True, in FotR they seem beautiful and graceful and elegant and wise - although also rather snobbish and self-centered. They know they are 'better' than other races so they can't help treating even their guests with a slight arrogance. When they meet the hobbits in the forest and when they ask Bilbo to sing.. I'm sure they are genuinely entertained but they still value their own poetry higher. :)

Now that th eElves, defenders of the Woods and lovers of nature, have passed, I think they are passing the baton over to us. What's the race of Man going to do with this world, now that it is in our power? The hearts of men are easily corrupted they say; and so they are. Now the Elves hand over the beauty to nature to us. But Tolkien, in designing the elves, most likely made them as the angels that purity and tranquility are-- they are so at peace they are even melancholy, so distressed that they are inward. The elves are by far inspiring to me; you have to hand it to Tolkien for dreaming up these ideas. Some of the most original fiction I've seen in my life lies in these books.

Elves in FotR are very wise and very...I am finding the word...not from this world. I mean, they are so noble they are almost not to touch and I always had feeling that something beautiful they hide. Like when hobbits were exploring Rivendell, elves were like magic.

 I agree with what everyone has said so far. Elves are just so enchanting. The way they walk and talk; their whole way is just beautiful. I'd love to be an elf...in another life...another time...another world...sigh okay I'm done

When living for hundreds upon thousands of years, one is driven slightly mad. Elves usually act otherworldly, mysterious, and esoteric because of this madness, but some become power-lustful, and that is what happened to Feanor. Of course, Elves can stand up to this much better. Humans, if given Elvish lifespans, would quickly descend into insanity, corruption, greed, and psychopathy. Words of wisdom from a hobbit.

I am not very into elves from LotR but I still find them very beautiful, ethereal, wise. They came through hard school in Sil so in FotR they are more stoic. I think that they are also very sad, besides their beauty.

I wish I could be one because there precision is amazing and how beautiful they are. Elves exist in my mind that how obsessed I am Haldir and Glorfidal (sp?) are my favourites because of Haldirs wit and Glorfindals Prophecy about the Witch king of Angmar x

Glorfidal (sp?)

Since you asked :-D and elsewhere spelled it Glorfindal... the latter is closer, but it's Glorfindel meaning 'golden-hair'.

Where you have an -a- instead of an -e- seems to suggest 'foot' may be involved, from a quick glance anyway, as Celebrindal means
'Silver-foot'.
