You forgot Lobelia Sackville-Baggins. I really like how she seems so awful in the first book and then in the last, when she sees the conclusion of her actions, she repents and leaves all her money to hobbits who were hurt during the Battle.

Well, her character got "repaired" in the hard times. That make her rather interesting character, since I had a lot pf good feeling for her at the end and a lot of bad at the beginning.

I am huge fan of Tom Bombadil. He is a mystery and everything he does has magic in it. I wish I could meet him!

I haven't read FotR in so long, but Fatty Bolger is perhaps one of my favourite "minor characters". It's a real shame that he isn't included in the movies, and is essentially left out of the fellowship and the rest of the trilogy. Sometimes I wonder why Tolkien included him in the first place.

Another favourite of mine, and perhaps one of Tolkien's most studied characters, is Tom Bombadil. He's one of those people that you just can't put your finger on. He's real and yet ethereal, and even the Hobbits aren't sure whether they should trust him or not. He just seems to live on a completely different plane of existence than everyone else. I would have loved to have his character fleshed out more fully. Of course, the question we all ask is, is he one of the Maiar?

I totally agree, but I don't think he was one of the Maiar. He just doesn't seem like one of those people.

My ultimate favorite minor character must be Tom Bombadil because he is just so jolly and cheerful and I would love to see his house in the wood and especially thanks to him the hobbits survived.

My favourite minor character is Halbarad of the Grey Company. He is so mysterious. I always wish I knew more about him.

Yes! Halbarad, who must have been the de-facto commander of the Rangers with Chieftain Aragorn away so much in the years before the War of the Ring. The other 29 Rangers that rode south with him have been the basis of many of my fan-fics.

I won't be very original and will say Tom Bombadil. I was attracted to him from his first appereance and as the story was going, I was more attached to this strange forest being. He has best songs :D

I always thought Tom and Goldberry were anomalies in the story and came across as an all powerful god-like being. It was a good story, but I still don't get how he fits into the whole storyline.

I have to agree with you. Personally, I find the character of Tom rather annoying, and juvenile as though he belongs in a children's story. Goldberry doesn't affect me one way, or the other.

I think part of the problem may be that Tolkien never spent a lot of time providing background on his characters, so perhaps we're missing something.

I agree that Tom - and Goldberry, but Tom is the active one in the story - are anachronisms. I’m guessing Tom crept in because JRRT was at this time still trying to write a Hobbit sequel (his singing does remind me a bit of the silly, Tinkerbelle stuff the Hobbit Elves were up to in Rivendell). For some reason, JRRT never removed him. Both Bakshi and PJ did, and in neither case did I consider it an inappropriate excision. But seeing how Sauron’s One Ring had absolutely no effect on Tom, he must certainly be vastly more powerful than Elrond, Galadriel, Gandalf or Saruman. Perhaps even if Sauron himself had come to Tom’s house, Tom could have been able to fend him off. That there is so little to read about Tom is that he is basically foreign to Middle-earth (the poem collection “The Adventures of Tom Bombadil” has 16 poems, only the first two of which deal with Tom, and both are very Hobbitish, if not even below that level).

Errrrr ... I think that could be too close to RRT's real-life beliefs for him to be comfortable with such a concept. And then TB seems to have been in Middle-earth longer than any non-Ainu (but is he a Maia or not?). Truly Oldest, probably even compared to Treebeard. And such an almost permanent, continuous presence in Middle-earth - I think that's just too unlikely.

Radagast the Brown - the good one. Balrog - the bad one.

Yes, Radagast was always a bit of a favourite of mine.
