This is a kick-off question for the Tolkien Revival 2006!!

What sort of community is Hobbiton? From the first chapter, can you tell what sort of values Hobbits seem to have and/or find important? Based on these values/attributes of the community, would you want to live there?

Hobbiton:
When I think of Hobbiton I think of peace. A town that seems immune to dangers, hate, evil. The people (hobbits) of Hobbiton take their life day-by-day without a care in the world for what was happening on the outside of their town, save a few.

Values:
As aforementioned their values are humble. They are care-free and mingle with everyone over a good bit of Old Toby. They seem to be just one big family working together to create a peaceful enviroment for each other.

Live:
Hobbiton would be a beautiful place to live. I love nature and the hobbits love gardening so I would love to live in a greatly cultivated area. Plus Hobbiton would be a wonderful place to just get away from it all and have a fun time with games and ale ;) So yes Hobbiton would be a wonderful place to live

^Ditto. I'd really like to live in Hobitton. Everytime I read the description of Bag End, I think: Why do we live in houses and flats? Why can't we have holes?

I'm torn two ways. I love the rural, close-knit community of the hobbits and Hobbiton. In general, they appear not to be greedy, yet all dependent on eachother-- they work together. They respect peace and beauty and nature and seem generally content.

However, they seem to live in blissful ignorance--and they seem to know that they are ignorant, and like to keep it that way. Most of them are also suspicious of outsiders. However, the Bucklanders seem to be less ignorant and less suspicious, yet they still share the core values with the rest of the Shire, so I think that if I were a hobbit, I'd prefer Buckland, or somewhere else towards the border.

I would enjoy going to hobbiton! However; I don't think I could live there. The ignorance bugs me too, lol. If I could live anywhere in M-E, it'd be Rivendell. But I'd love to travel to the Shire for a nice vacation! I think I'm very much like Gandalf in that aspect. :) And I agree about what others ahve said, about their wonderful character and lifestyle. Which is why it'd be fun to visit, no? :bye:

Well, I think it would be nice to live there, if I was a Hobbit and native to the Hobbitton area... :P From what I've seen of Hobbits, they're very suspicious of anyone living outside of their own Farthing. I'm not sure how much of that suspicion they'd actually show to your face, but I'd rather live where people like me. :P

I think I'd like to live in Hobbiton as a hobbit-child and a tween, but as I got older I'd probably get curious and maybe venture farther. I love how all the hobbits know each other and have their little idiosyncrasies. I've always thought it would be fun to live in a place where everybody knew everybody else, in a pretty close-knit sort of community. Also, Hobbiton is a beautiful place, and I'd enjoy living there just because of that!
I also agree with Cuilwen, their holes are adorable, aren't they? So cosy!

^I agree with all of you.

Hobbiton really isn't that bad a place. It's such a gorgeous place, all green and Shire-y. It seems like peace reigns there forever. However, it's like you guys said: hobbits are ignorant. They seem so sheltered and protected, but still shun those who shelter and protect them. Like Gandalf. Most adult hobbits look at him suspicously and think of him as a troublemaker. They have no idea how much he's done for them. Hobbiton may be a good place to visit, but maybe not to live in.

Hobbiton seems like a little closed off and close town. The type of town that is not affected by the outside world. Because of the dynamics of Hobbition, it would seem that gossip would be prone to run rampant!
Hobbition is also a bit pretentious in the fact ( like many of you said) that the Hobbits tend to be a bit ignorant . Hobbiton reminds me of Ireland! :p

^Love your avvie Rumil!!

Hobbiton seems to be a very close-knit, loving community despite the fact that the Hobbits don't very much like people from outside Hobbiton [even those from across the Brandywine such as the Tooks].
Hobbits love family, and normality... pretty much just a peaceful life full of fun and plenty to drink. :P Their values are all very similar and I think they ultimately revolve around a sense of peace and constance in day to day life. They really don't like it when their lives are interrupted, except in the case of parties. :teehee:
As to whether I would live there I have to say that it's a toss up. For all the peacefullness and love of life I think the Hobbits tend to be a bit ignorant of the outside world. They really don't want to believe that bad things are happening out there and they don't want to believe that their peaceful lives could be interrupted at any time.

As is stated in FotR by Gildor,"The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot for ever fence it out.”

Why thank you Larael. ^_^

If I would like to live there, I'm split. I sort of live in a Hobbiton town now.
We're often called slow motion. I like it, but I love the hustle and bustle of the city.
Hobbiton would be a perfect place to relax and just enjoy life but sometimes I think I would want to reside in a busier Middle Earth area.

I really like that quote. And it's true of course. I'd like to live in Hobitton, but I'd really need a long vacation every now and then. :p

I don't know if I'd like Hobbiton. Hobbits are very suspicious of strangers and very simple, so I don't think we would get along very well... And I'm not much of a country person either. I live in a Hobbition like place and it's very boring. Hardly anything moves at all! :annoyed2:
