What locations do you like or dislike? What is your favorite description of it?

I love the idea of the shire; Hobbiton, Bywater. I have big visions of them in my mind when reading the books. And I really like Bree and Amon Sul. I love the whole differences in atmosphere. And Rivendell; how uplifting it is after all the gloom they went through. Rohan I dont really feel a big connection with.

But theres a lot of locations I look forward to reaching in the book. Ironically one of them being when Frodo and Sam are wondering in Moria and across the plains of Gorgoroth. Everytime I read it I get the feeling anytime now they'll be pounced upon! and have to read on on as much as possible!

I don't know how you could not like the Shire. :teehee:

Quote:
Inside Bag End, Bilbo and Gandalf were sitting at the open window of a small room looking out west on to the garden. The late afternoon was bright and peaceful. The flowers glowed red and golden: snap-dragons and sunflowers, and nasturtians trailing all over the turf walls and peeping in at the round windows.

It's such beautiful imagery! The peaceful, rolling countryside that is full of plants and flowers and hobbits going about their daily lives....Oh, to live in Hobbiton. Or Buckland, as I quite like the Brandybucks.

To live in Hobbiton indeed! The shire sounds like an amazing place to retire, and to spend long weekends away!

I love the description Tolkien gives of Dwarrowdelf, you can really feel its magnificence and vastness. My favorite locations would have to be Shire, Rivendell, Moria, Lothlórien and the Argonath.

Personally i love the idea of the elven realms, especially in Rivendell.
But as far as realms of men go , hands down Minas Tirith. the whole idea of the massive fortress levels high is amazing.
The river Anduin meeting the Argonth is a glorious sight. One of the seven wonders of middle earth.

Couldn't agree more! Definitely one of the Seven Wonders of Middle-Earth. What would the other six be, I wonder? Any suggestions?

Theres a video on youtube that i found to be really good. It shows the 7 wonders of middle earth, not only with pictures from the movies but also other pictures .
The song playing is ''Of Beren and Luthien'' which is quite a fitting choice in my opinion.

Heres the link : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUKXMmR4CtQ
Enjoy

Interesting choices! I definitely agree with Minas Tirith, Argonath, Dwarrowdelf and Orthanc but I would replace Rivendell with Caras Galadhon, Falls of Rauros with Barad-dûr and Grey Havens with either Morannon, Cirith Ungol or Minas Morgul.

I have to say i was suprised that anything from Lorien wasnt there. But Dwarrowdelf and Minas Tirith were first on my list as well :-D

Just from Gimli's description, I'd have to say the Glittering Caves of Aglorand should be on it. They sound so beautiful! But definitely the Argonath, Isengard, and Lorien. The mallorn trees! How is it not a wonder?

i'd forgotten about the Glittering Caves. Yes they should be on there as well. Would anyone agree that there are more than 7 wonders of middle earth?

 I think Middle-Earth itself is a wonder! The descriptions are just breathtakingly beautiful...or lyrical, in the case of the "evil places."

I actually liked the Mines of Moria. And Rivendell, and the Shire, of course. Also the forest with Old Man Willow. And Tom and Goldberry's house. Basically where there is any adventure and mystery.
I'm excited to reread FOTR soon, and all the more so because I'm going to read a different version that what I originally read.

I love Mines of Moria, they are wonderfully descibed. But my first love will be Hobbiton with Bag End and Bagshot Row. Whole Shire is such wonderful place you have to love it with whole heart. Tolkien is a master of descibing beautiful places left by troubles.
