I would not assume the ring could do much good... however we have to consider it was the ring that allowed Bilbo to escape goblin town alive.... so that is sort of a grey area because it ultimately did that in order to get itself further to it's master... however it worked out for good for Bilbo and ultimately the world because by those events the ring was destroyed. Defenitely not the intent of the ring, however.

On the issue of golmn I was under the impression he was of the river folk and they were a little different from hobbits. Not sure about that, however.

I have heard (but that's just heard) that hobbits seem to be more resiliant against the ring's evil than some other races... however I do think the moral convictions of the individual have a lot to do with it.

I too believe that Golem was a hobbit and It seems that the bearer could use ring for some time in absolute need but we all know that more you use the ring, more it corrupts you.

Yes, no doubt. The more it is used the more corruption comes. A good point considering how long Smegul had the ring. How many times did he use it? How many years before smegul became golum and is it testimony to the little folk having extra resiliance against it since he was almost able to be turned back to good even after all thise years?

Yeah my sister said she was a little sad that he didn't turn back to good at the end.

Yeah, I was too at forst but at the same time I get the message that Tolkien seemed to be trying to portray and it is a very important one I think.

If you let something consume you it is a slipery road pulling away. (Whatever it might be even sometimes a good thing being consuming is bad) and a full recovery is not always garanteed depending on how long you let it do damage.
