Does anyone know if there is a story behind the making of Galadrial's Mirror? I would be interesting in finding out who made it and how it works. Any help is always appreciated!

The so called "mirror" was made by a shallow and wide silver bassin filled with water from the spring. Since water reflects some of the light it acts like a mirror. I believe there is some of her conjuring involved here that is nowhere stated. Very little is it told about her mirror

Good question! I don't think we know much about how it works...I suppose it's her power, and who knows, maybe the power of Nenya, too? I'm quite sure the mirror was lost along with much of the Elven beauty after the War of the Ring. Besides, Galadriel wasn't around to use it.

Maybe she does, and thats how she has become so wise, even more so than Elrond. Also, when the hobbits look into the Mirror, Galadrial says that she knows what they saw, for it is in her mind as well. So maybe she has some sort of magical connection to it? I'm not sure.

She would run away scared :-D

Ok, serious now. There is a strange possibility that the mirror might acctualy be controled by her, or better yet (how i think it might be) that Galadriel is just a medium for the visions to form somewhere, in this case in a shallow basin filled with water.

Cant tell the truth, not much is known about it

I don't think it is controlled by her (But a very good question!!) But I agree with Luthien - I think she may well look into the mirror, but she may have some sort of power over it.

Ah,here's the quote:

Quote:
"Many things I can command the Mirror to reveal" she answered, "and to some I can show what they desire to see. But the Mirror will also show things unbidden...."

There you go! I don't think she had a lot of power over it,but she had some.

when the power of the ring faded did the mirror also fail, i mean like was it through the power of her ring that the mirror worked or was it through some sort of elf magic?

That is true, because the ring was very powerful. But didn't she have to hide it from Sauron because he was seeking it? Also, was the actual mirror always there, or did someone craft it for her? Hmm, don't think we'll ever really know.

As far as I am concerned there is nowhere else written about the Mirror of Galadriel except the chapter in FotR. So I think we have to make our conclusions only from there.

My personal belief if that the water and the "mirror" had nothing special. Everything was Galardriel's and Nenya's magic.

That makes sense, thanks. Perhaps it was mostly PJ that made the mirror more than it should have been. And I fixed the spelling Miluiel :P Don't worry, I'm the kind of person who will never make that mistake again!

Well Galadriel is mysterious character. Not much is written but remember that she is one of the oldest Elves in Middle-earth and she has seen many things. She is quite wise and knows a lot of things. I think what happened to Boromir, who I really like, has nothing to do with her. I mean yes in the movies Boromir says that she spoke tio him but I think he told that because he wanted to persuade Aragorn to go with him in Minas Tirith and defend it from the Dark Lord. But if I remember correctly there is not such thing in the book. Of course I may be wrong. :)

As I remember, Galadriel 's mirror revealed things that have been, are, and some things that may be. Was anything revealed in the mirror about the future sure or set in stone anyway?
