Since she's called the "River-daughter," I've always equated her with a Naiad. I suppose, though, that she's a Maia, since I don't believe Tolkien ever mentioned Naiads....

I think she is very magical, though.

I'm sure she's a Maia, but I have to look up where it is in the books..I think it was in the appendixes or something like that...

I don't really know... I always think about her as a kind of nature creature...You know those fearies and little elves who are about to protect the nature and all his creatures... Kind of non-existing creatures in fact..

Yeah, Lan, same here. I've always considered her to be a Maia, but always thought about her as a Naiad.

I have always thought of her as being an enigma, just like Tom Bombadil. I don't think she's a Maia.

I've wondered that too. It keeps me up at night. No, it really doesn't, but it does bug me. I don't think she's a maia. I don't think Maia have names like Goldberry. Maybe she had a name change. Then she could be a maia.

I believe she's an elf! Isn't it said so in LotR?

Sorry, Eowyn_of_Rohan, but it's not. That is never stated in LotR.

Well, Elu_Thingol, technically, she is an enigma, since we have no way to tell what she really is, and we can only speculate. So, I'm saying I think she's a Maia, because out of the currently known options, I think that's what she's closest to, because I don't think she's a Vala, Elf, Man, or Dwarf, and she's most certainly not an Orc, Dragon, or Druedain.

Well to bring up this topic again I will express my opinion too.

I think Goldberry is as mysterious as Tom Bombadil. What we only know about her is that she is the River-daughter. Anything else. It is never writeen if she is a Maia or not. I do not think that she is a Maia. I think of her something like a nature spirit or something.

(taken from the references in the back of the Silmarillion)

Elrond is the son of Earendil (who was a son of an elf and a human) and Elwing.
---

The race of the child desends from the mother. Elwing was an Elf.

The child (when he comes of reasonable age) then chooses a mortal or immortal life.

Elrond chose to be rule Elves, Elros chose to rule men,

So Elrond is halfelven but his physical features would be elvish.

Elros's mother was elvish so he would inherit all physical aspects of elves, except immortality since he chose to rule men.

Thus, any child desended from Aragorn and Arwen would have a choice between immortality and mortality.

Just because Arwen chose mortality so she could marry Aragorn, their child would still get to make that choice.
