Hobbiton is a peaceful, relaxed, and laidback community who's people enjoy taking pleasure in the simple things in life- gardening, socializing, drinking, eating, smoking, etc. It would be a perfect place to live, and as said, to raise a family. It is a perfect haven from the world, undisterbed and quiet, and I would happily live there. However, if given a choice my own personal preference would be somewhere with more activity and books and such- somewhere like Rivendell, but that is only a personal preference.

If I was a Hobbit, I would live up north near, say, Oatbarton, and would grow barley and hops and be a Brewer. It seemed that a market was there with all the inns of the Shire, and by extension, a few kegs could be run to Bree on occasion. I agree with you ~*ArwenEvenstar*~ that to enjoy books and stories of Middle Earth, one would have to go visit Rivendell and even Minas Tirith. I have always envisioned them having massive libraries. But I also think that there was a repository of information in the Shire as well for those who were curious enough to want to read. I say this because it was obvious that Bilbo and Frodo were book-learned and could write well. It was likely a skill of most Hobbits I believe. But then the saying 'Don't go looking for trouble and trouble wont come to you' likely sums up the general mood of The Shire folk. :)

If I was a ranger I would love to be at the Sarn Ford campsite. My retirement plan I guess lol. Here is a scene from it in the War in the North game. The music is just great in my opinion! Still can't figure out how to get the video to appear on the page though. :annoyed: You don't see it in the video but you can actually see a couple of Hobbit holes across the river. If I can figure out how I may make a video myself and upload it.

I would love Hobiton as well, though like others I think I would start itching for a little more action eventually. I'd love to be a ranger too, Boromir. I kind of like the Erigeon and Enedwaith for some reason.

As a Ranger, I do like to spend many of summer days on the shores of Lake Evendim, and I have a nice homestead on the edge of the Twilight Hills, near the far reaches of the North Farthing, and my Hobbit friend and brewer, Freddy Largebarrel, comes up to fish and brings with him some firkins of his great ales!

My cousin and I may be camping soon and I can finally post some pics of the area that I mentioned a while back. Custom made a flag pole for the Boromir Gondor flag. Can't wait to get it all set up and get some pictures!

Haha Hanasian, that too. ;)

Cool Boromir! That'll be fun to see. :)

By the way, what does the book have to say about Needlehole? I only know pretty much what is in the online game about it. Is it mentioned in the book or is that a hobbit town not in original Tolkien work?

Acording to the Encyclopedia of Arda:

"Needlehole" - A Hobbit settlement in the Northwest of the Shire in the West Farthing near the border of the North Farthing. Nearest settlements to it are Nobottle to the west, and Waymeet about 30 miles south. There was a road between them, but it took a rather circuitious route to avoid the Rushok Bog.

It only seems to appear on the Map of The Shire after the Prologue in the Fellowship of the Ring book, with no mention of it in the text. There is a bit more about this map here on Tolkien Gateway.

The LOTRO developers were quite good at mining the source material for information for inclusion in the game.

Whereabouts in the books is that said or implied? Just curious what you are basing this claim on.

I'm not sure it's in the books. I am thinking in the movie where he makes the bomb to blow up the wall at Helms Deep.

:frust: Ah. It's that bit in that PJ Boyens fanfic, not J.R.R. Tolkien books. Gotcha.
 *checks sub-forum title again*

So... getting back to the Shire and Hobbits and Hobbiton... some of the regilnal areas of tThe Shire always fascinated me. Like the South Farthing being the prime pipeweed growing area, and the North Farthing being the brewing area... and I wonder what the Golden Perch Inn was like in Stock in the East Farthing.

If you were a Hobbit, where in the Shire would you want to live?
