nah I don't think so I saw the films first but I read it in swedish so I dunno how it is english

When I first read FotR (which was when I was 11) I thought that the Prolouge was a little boring and confusing, so I skipped it. (((Yes, I actually skipped part of the book!!!))) But after I finished it, then I went back right away and read the Prolouge. Actually, the Prolouge has lots of information in it. . .

This seems to be both a question of:

1. What age you read it first
2. What age you are: When I was the age of many of the people here, writing styles were quite different, and les mass-produced.
3. General level of interest. If you tried to read it because a friend raved aobut it, but never really picked up anything like it before, you would probably have at least some trouble with it.

I found it quite hard the first time even though I read heaps. I think I was a little young and found it hard to follow the story. I tried a second time though whenI was a little older and understood it easily.

I have to admit I found it quite difficult the first time I read it and I almost gave up on it! But I'm glad I persisited.

Hmm. I read the Lord of the Rings first when I was 13 (that'd be two years ago). And I actually found it quite a normal read. There were of course parts, or mostly words that stumped me-but otherwise, the only difference would have been that it was probably the longest novel I'd have read to that point (besides Harry Potter). It was the Silmarillion that stumped me on my first try (subsequently I put it down until a year later!).

It was easy the first time, but harder the second time for me. Especially in parts like The Council of Elrond, because I already knew everything, so I kind of had to force my way through it sometimes. I didn't read the Prolouge the first time either because I had already read the Hobbit. It made things a lot easier for me after I read it though. I remember thinking "Oh! That's what he meant when he said..."

For me it wasn't hard at all, but I don't find to many books hard to read. Just a wonderful book.

What I did was I read though it with my dad and then I read a little of it on my own and I only got to the last two chap. and stop. Then like a year later I finish it but forgot what happen and so now I am re-reading the books.

hahahahaha i thought reading FOTR for the first time was really hard i don't know why but the beginnings of books always determine the rest of the book so i was kinda bored and didnt feel like going on but i pushed through and got to the good parts *raises eyebrows* yeah but im reading it again and i like it better now there are a lot of things i didnt see the first time

Does one of you guys experience this?:
When I read a book I don't want to read to much in a row, when there's a pauze of, let's say, a day maybe two, I'm curious how it goes on and it gives me more pleasure reading.
When I read the book for the second time, I do the same thing, cause I may have forgotten some things. When I don't do this I end up finishing a book like LotR in a week and now it takes at least 2 weeks, mostly 3.

(I know, I'm a reading maniac )

That's awesome Gollum! English is my first language and i STILL had trouble reading it. I'm a few chapters into the Two Towers. I thought I'd better read the books though.

I read it the first time and the first chapter was not really getting my attention, but all of a sudden I grabbed the book and read it and finished it within a week. I loved it completely.
