I think Sauron would have won, eventually - Tom would probably be overcome in the end. I think it was Gandalf who said that he would not see the importance of the Ring, and would forget about it or something.

thats an interesting concept... i think the ring would have been safe with tom... but the ring meant nothing to him because he didnt have a concept of whats good or whats bad in the world. If anyone has read the adventures of tom bombadil, they would know that tom wasnt a species of Middle-earth and was a pure being: he knew nothing of power, status or money, and didnt want to. I have a theory that Tom represented a being before the fall- that is the downfall of men, when adam and eve gave into temptation. Hes not on anybodys side, because nobodys on his side . Also the Old Forest was full of the trees that were alive, i.e. Old Man Willow, who would have swallowed up any of Saurons servants. Tom would have just thought of the ring of as a nice piece of jewellry, i think. Oh well, thats my theory.

If the ring meant nothing to him. Wouldn't he sell it or throw it away. Then sauron would have got it and won.

I don't think he would have give it to Sauron, but I can imagine that he would loose the ring because he did not find it important to keep a jewellry save.
But what do YOU think, rain-maker??

I think that he would keep it safe for a while, and than when Goldberry was cleaning the house, he found it and thought about what is was. Than he would probably throw it away or put it somewhere where he would never found it again or something like that...

Yeah, as Lan said - he would forget about it or lose it or whatever. Eventually Sauron would find out where it was and he would come against Tom, who wouldn't be able to hold out against him forever.

I think Tom could fight against Sauron, perhaps with the help of Goldberry, but I don't think they would! But I think they would be strong enough...

Well, the thing is, it wouldn't be just Sauron coming - he would bring his armies, too, and I don't think Tom is powerful enough to single-handedly take on Saurons armies plus Sauron and the Ringwraiths. That's what I meant.

I thinking Sauron would have eventually got the Ring. Tom would have done his best to hide it, but he wouldn't be able to go anywhere, because he states he does not go past the bordor of his land. Eventually, word would get to Saruman, and he would send his little army in to get the Ring. They'd take it away and Sauron would win the war.
The End.

It said in the book that Tom shouldn't have the ring, because he would just forget about it, and throw it away. Then it would be found, and all of Middled Earth wuld be in a lot of trouble.

Yeah, I think that's what Lan was referring to.

I think that because the power of the ring corrputed even the kindest of hearts (frodo) then even if Tom thought it was useless, he would somehow be drawn to it more, for reasons he wouldnt understand. sooner or later the ring would of taken a hold of him and he wouldn't even know it...

I don't think the ring would have gotten Tom. When he put it on he didn't dissapear, meaning that it had no effect on him.
