At Rivendell Bilbo asks Frodo before the Council of Elrond,"Feel ready for the great council?" and Frodo replies,"I feel ready for anything." I just wanted to point out that little does Frodo know, he will be the one taking the Ring to Mordor. He doesn't even think about that possibility when he says that. It's almost ironic. |

That's what you call dramatic irony. ![]() |

Ahh, more genius from Tolkien. Well, there have to be funny bits in it, even if you only realise it's funny after you've read it once. |

You know.. I never thought about that like this, but it sounds great now I read it! It really seems, like he has known that he would go to take the Ring to Mordor even before he said it in the Council ![]() Thank you for sharing this theorie Larael ![]() |

Very ironic. *rueful laugh* Poor Frodo. I don't think he did know exactly what he was getting into. I mean, on one hand, you could say that he did, because he had already brought the Ring as far as Rivendell and faced the dangers along the way. But on the other hand, you have to think that he must not have known what he was doing sonce he volunteered to take the Ring. I think he knew it woudl be dangerous, but I don't think he really stopped to think about how dangerous it really was, you know? Sigh. He went through so much. Brave hobbit. *hugs Frodo* |

I think that it's sort of like "famous last words". That's an interesting point. ![]() |

I'd like to think that Frodo felt his part was played, let someone else carry on from there. I also think he kinda surprised himself, and also realized that nobody but he could carry on. Do you think he was still, at that point reluctant to see the Ring in another's hand? |

Post subject: | The depth of our entanglement..... |
I have often felt that way in life, not realizing what my enthusiasm was going to get me into. But, like Darrel questioned, it must have been more than that. Frodo had already seen and felt the treachery of carrying that burden so to make such a rash statement must have involve more than just enthusiasm—there must have been already a strong pull on Frodo from the Ring. I think many times we don’t really realize the danger of where seemingly innocent things can take us in life because we don’t see all ends. Especially when we are young. Even though we see and feel the weight of the warnings around us—even though we should see more than we choose to—we think we will be immune and that life is a grand game and everything will turn out ok, of course. The seduction of that first cigarette—those first few drinks—the thrill of sex—the rush of revenge, rebellion or pride—how can we know what horrible struggles we will have attempting to rid ourselves of those things in the end. We don’t know ourselves well enough to realize the why and the depth of our entanglement or we would exercise much more caution. |

Him not knowing is the beautiful thing about this to me, I mean going to a simple meeting to going to a not so simple quest is just...."wow" I mean how would you feel? I don't think many of us would have had the courage he had to take on this...quest. Heh makes him a brave little man Lol And at that time...I think there were less people to take on the quest, I mean really, they thnk that they can do it...but maybe when they sit and really think on what they have chosen...I think that many have backed out after thinking about everything that would happen if they were to fail. But then we have this little Hobbit, probably the most unlikely creature to take this task on.....taking this and somehow...completeing...(Missing a finger in the prosses but let's not think about that, yes? >_>;; ) It's simply inspireting to me. ~Alane~ |
