All right. Truce. No more battling with pirate talk.
I really like the way you put that. The power to prserve rather than destroy. I've never heard it that way before, but it makes a lot of sense. His is a saving power, like when he saved Pippin (I think it was Pippin.) from Old Man Willow, or whe he saved all the Hobbits from the Barrow Wight. Also, I think it's a quiet power. You don't look at him, with his blue coat and yellow boots and think "He's dangerous." But at the same time, he gives you this feeling of being protested as though nothing could hurt you when you're with him.

Glad u liked the way I put it lol.
I suppose like the people who organise major events, who work behind the scenes and are a key part of it and are rarely truly appreciated. Like such is Tom. he forms a bastion of goodness, a friend of all who fight against sauron. He will not give them force of arms, nor power over elements or the minds of men to achieve this( which are often the more appreciated methods of opposition to Sauron) but he gives them a power greater than these: hope and good old fashioned common sense. This is where Tom seems to be a power that not even Sauron can uproot, for he is so strong in goodness that no guile exists in him and his innocence provides reassurance to all those who stand with him.

You're on a roll today I think.
Excellent, excelletn way to put it. I really can't say anything to follow that. You hit it exactly right. That's exactly what Tom does, that's exactly how he gives help. Once again, very nice post!

I love Tom Bomabdil! I love mostly, the mystery of him.

He has been around since before time, and that makes him very old, wise and above all else brilliant!

Does he have magic powers, apart form being able to come to Frodo at the sound of his song?

I think Tom Bomabdil rocks and it's such a pity that they missed him out of the movies. He's such a fantastic character!

Who do you think would have been cool enough to play Tom tho? It would have been hard for an actor to potray Tom well and Im not sure whether you could call Toms power magic, rather in th esame reason Galadriel called her power elf magic in lorien.
Any other ideas??

Goodness me! The rold of Tom Bombadil would have to be played in perfection, both in physical appearance, presence and personality.

It would be very, very hard to choose an actor out there these days able to play such a role but I think maybe Robbie Coltrane would have made a fantastic Bombadil!

Spam it up frodos guide, spam it up lol :-D . Just kidding m8. Yeh, Robbie coltrane could make a good bombadil but loads of practice and research would have to be done to get the character down to a tee lol. 8)

It was an accident lol but no, I believe it's just the apperance and presence he has which would perfect Bombadil.

Yeah I was kidding m8 lol. We all have accidents and Coltrane did make a good hagrid, who is, I think the LOTR equivalent of Bombadil. Or the character is very similar lol.

I agree!

I have to say actually, although this is off-topic, that J.K. Rowling stole many ideas from LOTR, but we'll save this for another thread.

Yes, Robbie Coltrane would be a great Bombadil.

There is currently an active thread somewhere else here about similarities between tolkien and JKR. We'll save this discussion 4 then lol.

It was this 'One Ring' one I'm not sure exactly, but it was a FotR one with a blue cover and the ring on the front. In it when you meet Tom Bombadil your in the Old Forest and he asks you to collect 11 lilies for Gold-Berry or something. Well I spent ages killing spiders and collecting them... and that forest is creepy :P

Well then you have to go and find him which is impossible because he wanders around the forest and you get lost so easily. And when you have found him unless you stand right in front of him and hit X he doesn't notice you. Problem is that because he's walking about you have to position yourself in the right place. Every time I went to get in front of him he turned away and walked somewhere else. I ended up pretty much memorizing his route so I could stand in the right place. It was a bit of a nightmare to say the least hehe.
