Tom Bombadil rocked. I can understand why he wasn't in the movie, but he still rocked. He's one of my favorite characters from FotR.

I didn't perfer Tom Bombadil. However, I think it is because I don't really understand him. All I got was he was some guy that sung to trees to make them release Merry and Pippin and lived with a nature-lady.
Anyone able to kind of explain Tom Bombadil to me?
Also, does anyone understand what was going on after the Hobbits left Tom Bombadil's house and Merry, Pippin, and Sam were laying on the ground with gold jewelry all over them?

I love him! He seems so happy and at ease with the world, he aslo has the ere of mystery which surrounds him, who is he? Nobody really knows, nobody really understands him, thats what makes him stand out.

They were trapped in a barrow, a burial mound. There were wights, some kind of ghost/wraith/spirit things, haunting the barrows. Frodo wakes up and calls upon Tom to save them.

I really didn't find him annoying, he was just too much umm...perfect, I guess. I mean he had total control over what happened in forest. I think he was interesting character, it's a real shame that Tolkien didn't give any more history about him other than what's in books. I think that's the reason some people find him annoying.*shrugs*

I liked Tom Bombadil - he is, without question, one of the most assertive character of the whole story. Personally, I guess he's very dangerous but charming too. while reading his songs and poems, I always felt happyness and freedom.

I agree^ he has a sort detatchment from the rest of the happenings of middle eath, sort of like hobbits, but he has more powers and wisdom, yet chooses to live the happy, simple life.

Eh, I have them, but they're in The Tolkien Reader which is lost somewhere in the depths of our house. And we lost it before I realized what it was.

Nooooooooo! He's not annoying! He's a breath of fresh air!
BTW has anybody read the article that tries to prove Tom Bombadil and the Lord of the Nazgul are actually the same person? WEIRD!
It's quite fascinating, though.

Hmmm... I like Tom Bombadil. I think he was a little out of place, rather odd, and a lot about him is unknown. (To me, at least. Though, is it just me, or was there another book that had somehting to do with him? *Shrugs* I could very well be wrong...) But he brings a light and almost carefree feel to those very dark chapters. I don't know... I just like him.
I know, bad answer. But that's all I could think of at the moment. *Grumbles about being woken up too early to think straight*
