I think even for non lotr fans, they would have found Tom amusing. I may have said this before, but I feel that Tom is like the comic relief elemnt in th ebooks and to lose that aspect in th efilms is a big loss I think.

It's so sad they didn't let anyone sing one of Tom's songs. I know, it must have been Tom singing it, but since he's not in the movie.... But I love thosae songs ...

I have a very good friend who is quite a bit like Tom Bombadil, very happy and bouncy a lot. (She likes to sing too, though she doesn't do it nearly so much!) So of course I like dear Tom! I guess I could see how he could be annoying though.

ARGGGGGHHHHH I set the book aside after twelve chapters of nothing but Tom Bombadil and said ta heck with this I'll just stick with the movie.

I know the book is the original but it's terrible. I'll stick with the movie. Thank you. I got through twelve chapters like I said and said I will never read it again. I love the fact that Tolkien gave us the story but P.J. gave us the movie I'll stick with the movie

Tom Bombadil is just part of the book, without him, it wouldn't be complete. I personally like him, it makes the story a little lighter.
I can't understant why people dislike him, he's special, yes, but he's needed to make the story lighter and a little funnier. At least, that part. I do respect the opinion of others, only, this is what I think.

Tom Bombadil was a jolly fellow, but, he did get a bit annoying... Other than that, I loved him and his yellow boots!!!

I agree with ehloywgarldriel. The chapter with Tom Bombadil was a bit of a halting point in the book because the reader likes it better when the characters are out facing the unknown and not safe in a comfortable house, but I still adore Tom!

I like him too. He's a lovable guy who makes the story less dark.

@ Lady Brilwen: What's this? You've never read the books? Then why may I ask are you posting in the book board? You can't exactly comment in a book related thread if you have never read the book. By the way, the books really are a good read. Maybe you should try picking them up again.

Ah the age old Bombadil discussion. Personally when I read the book I loved him, and ths was the first time I'd heard the LOTR story (when I read the books). I love his songs and how he rescues the hobbits. plus how he can see Frodo when he's got the ring on. Wicked cool if you ask me. =)
