I think the beard was for the movie in 2005 Little Fish where he played a gay ex-rugby (or football - I've read two articles and both say different - I haven't seen it yet) league Heroin addict (that's a mouthful  ). Though the picture is of him with Natalie Portman so I guess he must have.

Yeah, his face is way too skinny for a beard. He almost looks like moses.
