Post subject:  Sir Ian Mcellen?

I know I'm really really ignorant but why is he called SIR Ian Mcellen? I've seen it over and over and on the TTT cast commentary Orlando says, "Ian was-I'm sorry, SIR Ian Mcellen..." So could someone tell me why?

Just because he was anoblished by the queen Elisabeth II, if I'm not mistaken... :P

^ 'anoblished' means he was knighted. mckellen was made a knight of the realm, and when someone is given a knighthood it is tradition to address them as 'sir' (think sir lancelot). now that we don't have knights in shining armour riding around on white steeds and slaying dragons, knighthoods have become marks of recognition for some great deed or acheivement. being made a 'sir' is a huge honour in britain, though i have no idea why mckellen was made one.

"Anoblished"?! Did I used the right word then?! :annoyed2:

Anyway, if my memories are good I think this was because of it's work as an actor (of plays more than films), we have the same kind of honor in France for artists, sportives... Except that it doesn't sound like nobilty...

i've seen the word 'anoblished' used elsewhere, although it may be a misspelling of 'ennoblished'. i'm not sure.

I think the word you were looking for was "ennobled," which means to make someone a nobleman. I'm not sure but that actually sounds as if it would be more special than knighting them.

OK, I didn't check on a dictionnary before writting "anoblished"... I just translate the french word my own way... Sorry! lol!

Well, you've seen the whole idea! :P *repeats all the way long "ennobled" "ennobled"... LOL!*

Lots of British actors/actresses/entertainers have had this honor bestowed upon them. Ever heard of Sir Elton John? Or Dame Judy Dench?

It's just a way to honor them. :]

Well personally I am more than happy he was made a Sir, he is a bloody good actor and does a lot for gay campaigns. Most people who are knighted are nobody's but he is somebody.

He's recently been awarded something else as well, can't think what it's called, but only 60 people are part of this "group" so it's a very high honour.

Oh, oh, I just saw this in a newspaper whilst in the US [amazingly enough :P]. According to his official website he was named to the Order of the Companions of Honour for his "outstanding achievements as an actor and also for his work in championing the causes of diversity."
