I live in Australia and go to a lot of theatre, subsribing to a number of theatre companies each year. Over time I have seen Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, David Wenham, Miranda Otto and Bruce Spence in quite a number of productions. I saw Cate Blachett most recently in Ibsen's "The Doll House" and she was MAGNIFICENT! This play seems to come up when one of the more famous actresses feels like treading the boards over here and I've seen Glenda Jackson and Judy Davis both in the leading roles. Quite honestly, neither could hold a candle to Cate. She really understood her character and what motivated that character. You felt you were watching something that was really happening as opposed to a great actress showing off her skills. It was an interesting experience and one that I'll long remember. The Sydney Theatre Company are hoping to take this to New York for a three and a half week season, starring Cate, if you have the opportunity... go and see it, you will not be sorry! |

It's good if an actor can play in both live theatre and film. I think Bernard Hill would make a great Shakespearean actor. I'm sure he's done some Shakespeare along the line...but it would be interesting to see him play King Lear or something... |
