Himmilstos, the overzealous boot-camp drill Sargent. You are referring to Ian playing this role in the well-done Richard Thomas/Ernest Borgnine 1979 remake of the great 1930 Lew Ayers film based on the awesome Erich Maria Remarque novel. He was a contemporary of J.R.R. Tolkien, seeing the bloodshed of the Western Front of WW1 from the German trenches. Both Remarque and Tolkien lived through the experience and both died in the early 1970's.
