^ Dk, never used it..
I´m a proud user of both PS and PSP... and I can´t really say which one is better... for selections PSP is more accurate while PS has a huge amount of effects; drop shadow, glows & stuff... that probably exists in PSP too, but I haven´t found it yet.
PSP is cheaper, aye, but I got them both via my dad.. he had to make a website and knows a guy with a comp software store so I got them almost free... Yay!
As Elanor said - A.S. is bunches easier than Image Ready; and you can make really good avies/moving stuff with them both.
Of the free software, GIMP is the best I bet. I´ve had it for like one week, but I totally had no time to figure it out... Bubs makes miracles with her Gimpy.
Some free proggies: PhotoFiltre, Paint.net, PhotoPlus 6
They´re probably good once you learn ´em but I´ve got PhotoF. & P.net on my comp and I since I can´t use them properly, they´re no use for me.
Ah, life.

I think that I've decided on PSP, but I have one last question that's going to go up in a poll. Would you reccomend the download version or the version that gets sent to you?

I would recommend the mailed, just because then you get the manual and disc and everything, so if your computer ever crashed, there would be no worries

Personally I like photoshop though that doesn't let you do 3D text which is the one downside. And PSP is free ^_^

N00b question: where can one download a free version of PSP? Or, going on previous comments, where can I request a copy to be sent to me? If that makes sense...

There are no free versions of PSP (unless you download it illegally), but you can download a free trial version off of Jasc.com, I think If you want to buy it, you could probably buy it off that website, or they have it in lots of office supply stores, like Office Max and Staples

Photo Impact: A very easy program to use, even easier then Psp & PhotoShop. Used it for most of my work. An ideal program for beinners ( www.ulead.com )
Paint Shop: I wouldn't reconmend this program as it hasn't done it's almost best for me, unless it is pspX.
Photoshop: A little harder to use and get use to. But it is a good program. It is really good for textures and brushes.
Over all i would either reconmend Photo Impact ( 8 - 12, are the best versions), or PhotoShop .
