I want to eventually get my own domain so anyways, is there anyway to get a FTP client without handing oodles of dollars (or pounds if you're British)?

Yep. There are many availiable for free, but the one I use is Smart FTP, which can be downloaded here.

I like FileZilla. If you use Mozilla Firefox, another option is the FireFTP extention

Look into "Fetch." I know it comes for Macs but you may find a Windows version. It is good.
