Hi I'm thinking about buying a domain plus a host and was wondering whether someone could give me some pointers on what kind of software, FTP etc. a good hosting plan should have. Sorry for the weird question, but I'd really like some help!

You should try to find a host that has PHP and mySQL, because those let you put up scripts like this forum, or a guestbook or whatever. Any host will have FTP, because that's how you put files on the server. You might want to find a host that has a control panel that you like (often there's a demo), because with the nicer panels you can upload and move files from the panel itself, without needing to install an FTP client.

A very good FTP client is SmartFTP. it's free for non-commercial use, so you'll never have to pay. It's also easy to use, I taught myself in about 10 minutes all the basics with it.
you can get it here: http://www.smartftp.com

You'll also want a decent amount of bandwidth/ data transfer - but don't get one that says unmetered bandwidth as it's never really unmetered. I've also been told that you shouldn't get a package that includes a domain name, you should get the separatly. This is because if you don't like your host and want to move else where they sometimes don't let you take your domain name with you.
You should try my host: http://ecwhost.com/ They're pretty cheap and they've always been great.

Thanks Elanor! That host looks fantastic, even when you convert it to Australian dollars . I was looking at some Australian hosts, but they don't seem very good compared to others. Thanks again for the tips!

You can get a Gallery. You don't need to download anything and it's free
