~LOTR Sonnet Contest~ *JUDGING* All votes have been sent in. - THE JUDGING IS CLOSED! THE AWARDS ARE UP: http://www.arwen-undomiel.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=628072#628072 As all entries have been sent in, the judging thread can now be openend! Judges: 1. Antigone 2. Turwaithiel Shadeslayer 3. Riniel Anariel As there had only been six participants in the end and as I think that in such a case it would be a bit unfair to have four winners (1st - 3rd place + HM), I've decided that everyone should get an award. So, please vote as follows: 1st (10 points): 2nd (8 points): 3rd (6 points): 4th (4 points): 5th (2 points): 6th (1 point): Thanks to all participants! Each sonnet is unique and wonderful! You've all done a great job! I think judging will be quite difficult. ![]() Here are the entries: Meldawen Where once hobbit feet had trod Under the fading mallorn's golden leaves From journey over land abroad They stopped for briefest of reprieves. Where once a dwarven axe had rested In soaring Elven city bright Minds and hearts and souls arrested A refuge still from Lands of Night. Where now leaves fall into the water Ripples spreading outward still What could be called fair Valinor's daughter Lothlorien, the Elven realm tranquil. Still here in Lorien, lingering in silent praise Still here are wistful memories of better, brighter days. Altariel Frodo Beyond Hope by Altariel Frodo Please, lift me up now in your strong arms Speak to me, let me hear your soft voice. My mind is so stained by darkest harms And standing no longer is a choice. I feel so weak, fragile and small And the fire and darkness are great. When I crawl on, it’s just to fall And pain seems forever my fate. The Ring of Fire scorches my tired mind And from it I cannot seem to hide. Sam, you alone can help me to find A way to light. In you I confide. Without any hope can I live on? Will I ever again see the dawn? Rose of Rivendell My fate Long ago in the peacefullness of Cerin Amroth we met, A magical moment it took for our hearts to intertwine, Years have passed, but to me it seems as if it has just been yet, From then on I knew that you should always be mine. But our destiny had already been sealed forever, A brave warrior and mighty king you should be, We could not share our lives being together, Because sailing into the West was the fate for me. But then for us each day would be full of sadness and pain, So for you I have decided to forsake my immortal life, To prevent our feelings eternally to be in vain I will leave everything beloved behind to become your wife. Nothing in this world will ever have the power to make us part, So forever and for always you will be the owner of my heart. ~by Rose of Rivendell (24 November 2006) Fencing Maiden A Plea What is to forgive the wrong he wrought? When so, his heart would penitent be. Thy respect he has not sought, But dying, honors you in humility. To picture his valor are naught but inept, He traded his breath for the hobbits lifespan Such honor must be treasured and kept, In retention of this valiant man. His blood wounds stain and mingle with thine, Just like his own desperate heart. Soon he goes far off, with the brine Yet love of his people he must impart. Who can save Gondor, from this fate of this Ring? You my brother, my Captain, my King. Lady Erana Eowyn's song I walk along a lonely path. It seems to take too long for me. I ever mourn, I never laugh. Beside the white Simbelmyne. To my dear cousin's grave I go. He fell in war by a foes hand, Along with many others too, King Theoden's only descent. The song I sing, it hurts me deep. I cannot breathe, I cannot walk, I cannot think, I cannot sleep. I miss you, but can't get you back. I'm singing, tears running down and drop onto the floor. I'm desperate, I'm depressed, I don't want to anymore. eowyn of ithilien I stand upon the brink of a chasm deep and wide. All is dark below me; I cannot turn to find the light. I fear my nerve will fail me ere I reach the other side, But I must stand and wait and watch for the ending of this night. And for this moment all is quiet, for this moment all is still; Time has halted surely and the world has ceased to spin. With you stood here beside me I no longer feel the chill – For the first time since the Darkness, I feel that we could win. You said that you had found something and maybe you speak true – I feel now I have found some hope in this prevailing gloom. But now my head’s in disarray and I don’t know what to do; How can I have found happiness in this very hour of doom? You warm the hope I thought was dead And make my heart war with my head. |

Ah alrighty then =) Comments Meldawen: very lovely. Connects future and past very nicely and the poem flows easily Altariel Frodo: dark. Depressing. Loveable. Rose of Rivendell: nice portrait of what happened so many years ago, even I (and I'm anything but romantic!) found it romantic lol Fencing Maiden: could have known you'd do something realted to Boromir. xD It sent shivers down my spine, the poem did. The quote on the end of it was ... wow. A classic one, everyone uses it but it just fits so... amazingly... Lady Erana: heh, the first line reminds me on Green Day's Blvd of Broken Dreams ... reflects the way Eowyn felt when Theodred the way I've always pictured it eowyn of ithillien: love it how you don't mnetion any names, just feelings, love, undecideness ... Votes: (even though I hate to choose between so many good poems) 1. Fencing Maiden 2. eowyn of ithillien 3. Rose of Rivendell 4. Meldawen 5. Lady Erana 6. Altariel Frodo -bangs head- How dare you guys write so good poetry? ![]() |

Sorry it took me so long to get my vote in - internet problems. Stinky old cox ![]() 1: Meldawen ( I really enjoyed this one! Everything fits very nicely together. Rather catchy, very happy and cheerful. This is my favorite part, "Where once hobbit feet had trod Under the fading mallorn's golden leaves From journey over land abroad They stopped for briefest of reprieves." Amazing job!! ) 2: Fencing Maiden ( Very uniform, everything sort of rhyms. I really like this one a lot too. I adore this last section "Who can save Gondor, from this fate of this Ring? You my brother, my Captain, my King. " Brilliantly Done!! ) 3: eowyn of ithilien ( I really loved this one!! I assume you are speaking of eowyn & faramir. Two of my favorite characters. I adore the fact that you chose their romance!! It is a little sad - it made me cry ![]() 4: Rose of Rivendell ( Again, very happy. Love the ending "Nothing in this world will ever have the power to make us part, so forever and for always you will be the owner of my heart. " Lovely Work!! ) 5: Altariel Frodo ( Very nice rhyming. I love this part the best, "Please, lift me up now in your strong arms Speak to me, let me hear your soft voice." Beautifully done! ) 6: Lady Erana ( Interesting subject. I really like it! It is really sad though ![]() This was really hard to choose!! |
