Post subject: | The Pretentious Labelling of the Best Whatevers |
Hi! Now that this decade is going to end and the world shall die in a horrible and hideous doom of fire! (I wish. Oh, no, my cherished two dozen or people are still alive. Never mind.) Now that this decade is ending and a new one is just around the corner, there's a MILLION little sites and magazines buzzing about what were exactly the most important...whatevers that came out of this decade. Now why this is here? Well, guess what. YOU get to make your own fancy little list. But, this is the contest section! How can you make that a contest? Silence. Let me finish. Once you've decided what whatever you want to spend your time seeking which ones were the best and which ones weren't, you get to make a graphic out of them. I'll say banners but the blends and avvies people will whine and if I say blends, the avvies and banners people will whine and if I say wallpapers, everyone will be out for my overinflated head. So I'm just going to say make whatever graphics you want. How many whatevers can you choose? Well if I said just choose how many you want, the ambitious will make twenty, the lazy will make three, and the two will quarrel until my ears bleed to death. So instead, I'm going to abuse my authority of contest-creation and say seven. Not six, not eight, bloody seven. One graphic for each day of the week. But if you want, I'm giving you the entire month to do it. What whatevers can I choose? Anything that pops inside your little noggin of yours. Telly programmes, books, films, fictional characters, albums, songs, video games, technologies, just literally whatever. Just no real people. It gets confusing and complex and it's a lot better left alone. HOWEVER, and I bet the majority are going to ignore this completely, it has to come from this decade. As in from the 1st of January, 2000 to the 31st of December, 2009. I'll give you an extra day in the new decade to work on whatever that just came out on the 31st. When you're making the graphics, I want a list of what I'm supposed to be seeing. What does that mean? Say you think Lord of the Rings, the movies, were great. Fine. Use them. You can't use the books, however, since they came out in the Fifties or so. See the difference? What about albums and songs? If you said I can't use real people in my graphics but I can use albums and songs, what do I do? Whine and cry? Or you can think of something like using caps from a music video or the album art. In cases where I see the lovely faces of the members on a graphic and you tell me that's the album cover, I can look up the album cover and tell if you're telling the truth. Or the music video. What about characters. I won't ask you for original lovely characters that were created in 2000s 'cause otherwise we'll be picking apart the twenty or so fictional original guys. But here's the catch, the portrayals of the characters need to come from this decade. Here are some examples: Peter Jackson's Legolas? Yes. Ralph Bashiki's Legolas? No. Revenge of the Sith: Darth Vader? Yes. Return of the Jedi: Darth Vader? No. David Tennant's Tenth Doctor? Yes. Tom Baker's Fourth Doctor? No. Christian Bale's Batman? Yes. Michael Keaton's Batman? No. (There was a gap in the Nineties in term of the Batmans) The Nth version of Jason Voorhees that came out in 2009? Yes. The original Jason Voorhees that came out in 1980? No. Robert Downey Jr's Iron Man? Yes. The Tales of Suspense #39's Iron Man from 1969? No (I had to look that one up) How am I going to tell? Well aside from the blatantly obvious such as different actors, I don't. I'm going to shift my cynicism aside and trust you guys to do the right things and if you don't, I'll be more inclined to activate the Doomsday device that blows the world up into nice little space debri. ALSO, if for whatever reason, this character stays in the same series before this decade (i.e. an anime character), he's not allowed. Art style might change but he's still relatively the same character. The portrayal of the character hasn't changed. So a nice little recap of the rules for those who had gone brain dead, comatose, or otherwise ignorant of what I just said. 1. Choose something that you like. Book, film, video game, characters, whatever. Just no real people. 2. Find seven examples of said thing above that you thought were great or most evil or whatever. 3. Make sure they came from this decade. 4. Make a graphic of each example. 4a. Make sure the graphic is brand spanking new. You have an entire month, remember? 4b. You can choose the graphic as long as it stay consistent. No lone avatar among a group of banners. 5. Post them here in this thread before the 2nd of January, 2010, along with a shiny list of what they are and when they came from. And again, no real people. Otherwise, have fun! Poor Unfortunate Souls 1. Caunion the Time Lord 2. Freya Baggins 3. Turwaithiel Swann 4. Telturwen 5. Nurrantiel Mashiara 6. Johnny's Fan 7. DamsonRhee 8. Pandora 9. keyodie Did I mention I do not want any real people? |

Splendid. I do hope you enjoy your stay here...*hand moves for the trapdoor release button* EDIT: IMPORTANT NOTICE: No real events EITHER! I'm sure we all want to list the seven best "when so-and-so did this-and-that". Unfortunately should one inconsiderate little person say "when so-and-so won this lovely war" and another person just happened to LOSE someone in that "lovely war", it's a lot better if you don't mention that. On the other hand, if you want to do fictional battles or coronations or elections, knock yourselves. Just make sure it's blatantly fictional. For example, the Battle of Thermopylae from 300. You can use that. Why? Because even though it was loosely based on a true event, there is a reason why it's loosely based. You cannot use (even though you can't in the first place) Normandy from Saving Private Ryan. Find the lovely line between realism and fantasy and you should be fine. |

[I'm not participating - too graphics-inept, unfortunately - and therefore posting in pretentious brackets. Just wanted to say I love your text, lovely, cynical, lovely! ![]() |

Why, of course you can join, Turr. Mind the ominous room that is locked from the outside. And thank you, Ea. |

After reading a looong list of the decade's 100 best "whatevers" in one of those millions of magazines, I'm itching to have my own say on the matter. I'd love to join. ![]() And just to be absolutely clear, it's either 7 banners, 7 icons or 7 blends, but no mismatching, correct? I don't want to anger you and as a result get the world blown up. |

....Oh sorry, there goes Australia. Yeah, no mismatching or intermixing. Just to clarify. I use "best" because who doesn't like the best. You can use any adjective in the English dictionary to describe your "best". The seven sexiest video game characters, the seven most outrageously evil armies, etc. |

I love this. I'd join and make 2 banners, 2 wallpapers, 2 blends and an avatar for the lulz... if only I had a graphics program. *sits back and watches* |

Honestly, darling, did you have to pick Austrailia to go first? Why not Antartica or something less beautiful than Austrailia? I was so looking forward to visiting there...*heaves a sigh* Alas, now only may I go and work on this battle... ![]() |

Are you questioning my authority, Tur? Perhaps, you would prefer another target. A closer target, perhaps? |

![]() Caun, will you put Australia right back in her place! THIS INSTANT! I'm leaving for Australia on Tuesday and I'm not gonna fly for 24 hours to get there, just to find out that some adolescent with an anger management problem/world dominion-complex has done silly things to the continent! |
