To me Faramir is very wise. he can show what he can do and yet his father beats him down, which I hate! if I was his wife he would never be allowed to speak to him like that.

you can see it in his eyes as well. he knows how to handle things his way and knows the best way to solve them.

I love him. :bye:

true. boromir was gifted with manly strenght and faramir with both stength and wisdom. however, i didnt like it in the movie how they showed him lured into the ring to compete like boromir. that was very unlike faramir.

That was probably the worst deviation from the book to the movie. Faramir is incredibly deep-thinking and wise. One of his best lines is "I do not love the sword for its sharpness nor the warrior for his strength (?), I love that which they defend." He can see past the glamour and fame of soldiers to the true nature of things. He is able to give words of comfort to Eowyn when she is on the edge of suicide.
IMO His father was always reminded of his mother whenever he looked at Faramir. As he believed (I think) that Faramir was responsible for the death of his wife, I can understand why Denethor hated Faramir so much. But he should NOT hold the death one person against a child! It wasn't Faramir's fault! Grr...Although, the spite of his father probably helped Faramir to become wiser than most in some way.

yah Faramirs father is soo mean! how could someone wish there son was dead to replace there other son!
It is so sad when Pippin is singing to him and they show Faramir fail.

I was glad that he lived though!

I always felt bad for Faramir. No matter what he does he never got appreciated by Denethor. It is sad how Denethor showed show mush favoritism towards Boromir. I love that line too, Nurrantiel.

I agree with you too Legolas___101, that was sad. I always feel like giving Faramir a big hug when ever I read the books or see the movies. :( He needs some.

Uhm, I don't think Faramir is shown as an obssessed-for-the-ring as Boromir in the movie. He didn't try to get it out from Frodo as obssessively as Boromir did, but anyway, he was kinda influenced by it, no way. But! I do think Faramir is a wise character, yep, and I don't really like how Denethor acts towards him. It sucks! Both Boromir and Faramir are awesome characters, but they are different. I think Denethor is not able to cope with these differences and tries to fix his attention on the son that gives him more benefit, that's Boromir. He seems to be a better warrior and...well, that's an important issue for his father, who is blinded to see his youngest son's skills. It's a pity, but part of life. Anyway, yep, Faramir (putting it in an informal way) rules! XD :D

Kudos to Nurrantiel for a perfect answer.

I really don't know what to add except that Faramir is an endurer. He withstood the abuse of his father, and though wounded in heart and in body he continued on. He and Eowyn made the perfect match for they both were of the same mind. I actually think Faramir had much to do with the fact that Eowyn changed from wanting the fame and glory of being a queen to the more humble idea of being a healer. Of course her close brush with death might have affected that decision too.

Aw, thanks Larael.

You're so right, Faramir had to endure so much. That really connected him with Eowyn. She had gone through so much watching Theoden decay and then die, getting "rejected" (wrong word, I know, but that's all I can think of) by Aragorn, and finally forced to stand aside instead of fighting.

Faramir had gone through being hated by a father, watching his city fall into ruin, the "glory of Minas Arnor of old" was all gone. He watched his brother go off to battle numerous times, and then finally was forced to bear the burden of Minas Tirith itself as his father went mad.
They both understood each other. And since they had both gone through a lot, they turned to each other for comfort. Faramir was able to help Eowyn through everything because of all he had gone through.

Perfect description Nurrantiel! ^^ I think that is a good way to define why things went as they did between Faramir and Eowyn :)

*wonders how you can see it in his eyes when you're reading a book*

Anyway, I think Faramir was under a lot of pressure and he did in the end make the right decission. He fell into the same trap as Boromir really wanting to help his kingdom, though I suppose there was something that made him resist. Maybe it was the fact that he wasn't forced to be close to it for so long or maybe he was more resilliant than Boromir...

He didn't fall the same as Boromir because Boromir was more concerned with glory. Faramir wasn't.

I think Faramir was wise but some part of him wanted his father to approve him. I don't know how someone can blame a child of his mother's death or just because he looked like her.

"'Good night, Captain, my lord,' he [Samwise] said. 'You took the chance, sir.'
'Did I so?'' said Faramir
'Yes sir, and showed your quality: the very highest.'
Faramir smiled. 'A pert servant, Master Samwise. But nay: the praise of the praiseworthy is above all rewards. Yet there was naught in this to praise. I had no lure or desire to do other than I have done.'
'Ah well, sir,' said Sam, 'you said my master had an elvish air; and that was good and true. But I can say this: you have an air, too, sir, that reminds me of, of -- well, Gandalf, of wizards.'" ~ The Two Towers, Book IV, Chapter V, The Window on the West

In the entire Lord of the Rings, I have two favorite characters and Faramir is one of them. His name means sufficient jewel, which I think is perfect. His wisdom is sufficient to help him deal with situations in which both his brother and father would stumble. He was even taught a bit by Gandalf--what an opportunity. He's wise, intelligent, with dark raven hair---what a noble leader of men!
