It's a case of never appreciating what you have until it's gone; notice how it nearly took Faramir's death to make Denethor realize the treasure that he had in his second son.

Another concrete example of Faramir's wisdom is how he deals with Frodo in the caves. It would have been right to keep Frodo, since that would be obeying what he knew his father would have wanted. On the other hand, he was able to see the greater good, even showing compassion by not killing Gollum when he had the chance.

I like the character of Faramir a great deal but i believe that the way in which he is treated by his own father is appauling. In the long run however, it really builds his character and only end up attributing to his strength and courage. I do think that he feels as though he'll never match up to Boromir and i believe that that will remove a piece of his being so to speak. It's just a real shame that his father feels this way but in the end, it only brings out the best in him :)

The movie depicted Faramir as cold and mean, I think. And those random mood swings made me thing "teenage angst", not "brave and wise warrior." I hated the movie depiction.

I think that Faramir is wise, yet like a little boy. He doesn't have the guts to really stand up to his father, which is the little boy part. Denethor was retarded to just be so rude to Faramir like that, though.

That was very well said Ivreniel. Some men are able to live their lives as a shining example of how all should live them. I think of Joseph and Daniel from the Christian bible. It leaves many of us shaking our heads as to how they pulled it off. But I love it none the less! I feel the same way as you about Faramir. I just read TTT and his interaction with Frodo and Sam is sooooooo good. I could turn right around and read it again! What a man of shining quality and integrity to fix our eyes and hearts on!

Yes, Faramir was like Denethor in appearance and in mind. I love the description of Faramir in the appendix:

"So time drew on to the War of the Ring, and the sons of Denethor grew to manhood. Boromir, five years the elder, beloved by his father, was like him in face and pride, but in little else. … Faramir the younger was like him in looks but otherwise in mind. He read the hearts of men as shrewdly as his father, but what he read moved him sooner to pity than to scorn. He was gentle in bearing, and a lover of lore and of music, and therefore by many in those days his courage was judged less than his brother’s. But it was not so, except that at he did not seek glory in danger without a purpose. He welcomed Gandalf at such times as he came to the City, and he learned what he could from his wisdom; and in this as in many other matters he displeased his father."

One of the best essays I have found on Faramir is here: http://www.thetolkienwiki.org/wiki.cgi?Faramir

It is worth the read.

I read that, too, and I love it! :) The book descriptions can so often describe what anyone else could not.

Isn't that the truth! Often I have tried to put Tolkien in my own words and finally just given up and quoted him! :-D

I just had to write about Faramir who all of you have so wonderfully described in this thread:

Prince of Ithilien

forgiveness took his heart
in place of bitterness
when he was young

his mother taught him well
in so few years
to love

beauty, lore and music
that ever overflowed
his soul instead

of power, lust and pride
which take the hearts
of lesser men

focused on themselves
delighting in the sword
just for its sake

pain was ever near
as mother—father—brother
left him

alone to fight self pity and resentment
in gloom and trial
to find his way

to virtue, love and wisdom
in his heart
when joy seemed distant

the wizard gave him hope
to be in darkest days
his best:

a man of mercy, dreams and gentleness
yet not weak
for all could see

that he could make decisions quick and good
and hold the hearts of men
in the fray

his heart was sad to grief
by wounds his father dealt
yet steadfast

in dark days of ebbing power
beside him brave and patient
he remained

in peril of his life and rank
he would not compromise
but stood

with integrity and honor
when all seemed lost
he ever gave

and saw at last that love
which others find so hard to give
comes back again

Thanks you guys! Faramir is such an inspiration! If only more of us could be like him then this dark world would be a better place.
