I dont know whether it was just me that when i first saw the movies before reading the books i dispised Eowyn VERy much. me and my friends thought she was a good for nothing showoff trying to get Aragorn's attention all the time. But when i read the third book, i actually liked her and accepted her as one of hte heroes. my friends on teh other hand, continued to call her "Ewwwyn" lol. just wondering if we were the only one who hated the movie version of Lady Eowyn.

Wow. You could have been describing me! I drew all over her picture in my TTT calendar after it came out in theatres. My friends and I talked about how we each wanted to jump up and shout "Aragorn's already has a girlfriend, so leave him alone" whenever she showed up.

I liked TLotR a lot, but didn't have a favorite character until I read TRotK. Then Faramir and Eowyn were my favorite. When I watched TRotK, I forgave her when she killed the Witch-King.

I can't really understand what you mean having read the books first. I always liked her character though and I think I always would have being the feminist that I am.

The thing with books is that you can get inside the characters head and see how they feel why they're doing this what the character knows and doesn't know. With the movies it's different you only see the characters, you see the actress... which you maybe don't like, you see the character in a rather one-sided way if there isn't enough about them.

I.E.
If PotC was a book tons of people would probably like Elizabeth more because you'd see inside her character a litte bit more. And the way she tries to fight the feelings she has for Jack would be a little clearer.

Anyway back to LotR that is just a sort of example for what I'm trying to explain.

I think I like Eowyn in the books and in the movie. But I have read the Two Towers before seeing the movie, so I already knew some more about Eowyn. In the book you can see how lonely she is, in that big house filled with men who don't give her attention in the way she wants. They respect her, and see her as a member of the royal family, but she is the only female member and feels rather alone. Than, when Aragorn arrives, he gives her attention in a normal way, like they are both equal, and he is the first man she falls in love with, but in silence.
She can't help it falling in love with him, no-one can, but because she is a famous character in the movie, everyone hates that, they all want Aragorn and Arwen together, not Aragorn and Eowyn.

I like Eowyn in the book better than in the movies.....she's just cooler, IMHO. It (the book)portrays her loneliness much better.

Yes, I had "read" the beginning of TTT when the movie came out, but I was VERY VERY little and didn't really have a clue what was going on in the book...I don't think I even made it past The White Rider.

i think eowyn (like most of the characters) has a lot more depth in the book. her character isn't drastically different in the film, but i feel you understand her better and connect to her more in the book. it's the genius of tolkien that by describing a single look or gesture of eowyn's you know exactly what she's thinking and feeling, and i think those little moments have more weight in the book.

^I agree. I like the book version of Eowyn better, but only because we are given more insight into her chracter in the book. I liked her in the movie, and I thought Miranda Otto did a great job playing her. But the book, I like most of the characters better in the book because we know more about their character. Does that make sense?
I think it's a bit unfair not to like Eowyn because she loved Aragorn. You can't help who you love, even if they're taken, so don't be too harsh. She has feelings too.

Of course I like the Eowyn book version better. She was the first Eowyn I got to know, as I read the books before I saw the movies. Her character in the movies almost shocked me at first. She could have been portrayed to some as a good for nothing boyfriend stealer depending on how you looked at it. However one line she mentioned whilst in the caves at Helms Deep redeemed her character. Goes something along the lines of-

Quote:
They follow you because the love you, because they do not wish to be parted from you.

She goes on to say that she wishes to follow him not because she loves him, but because she wants to fight for what she believes in. These few lines seemed to be the only connection between the Eowyn I knew from the books and this new movie Eowyn. As time went on I did become less harsh of her character and I have found many other similarities between the two. Of course book Eowyn is still quite dear to me.

I really love those lines I think they're one of my favorite parts of LotR book and movie.

I believe it's "They go only because they would not be parted from thee--because they love thee."

I have read TTT before it had come out on screen.
I loved Eowyn so much, she was my fave character in all the book.
I've even made my msn addie with her name.
When I saw the movie, I was quite desapointed at first by how she was used by PJ.
But in ROTK I thought she was brilliant, wonderful, amazing, and she remains my fave character (with Aragorn and Samwise lol)

Eowyn was awesome in both the books and the movies, but I like her better in the movies because she's more of the agressive feminist type.

I liked her in both. To be honest, there wasn't that much of a difference, IMHO. I certainly like Eowyn better than Arwen though!

Eowyn was, I think, stronger in the book though, which I like. She was aching inside, but stayed strong. That's... actually a lot like me.

I think in the end, I like her just a tiny bit better in the books. But I love her in both. :)

I was exactly the same Tinuviel! :) I hadn't read the books so when I saw the movies I kind of loathed Éowyn. I basically saw her as getting in the way of A/A.
Now I've read the books I respect her a whole lot more. She's still not one of my favourite characters or anything but I admire her strength.
Anyway who couldn't possibly adore Éowyn and Faramir in the Houses of Healing? :)
