What are they?
I must say i feel a certain degree of pity for them in the sense that they are controlled by the orcs, and have no freedom...that's quite sad?
Where did they come from?
Hmmm...I don't know a great deal about these creatures so would anyone care to fill me in? Not literally lol!

I believe they were just a kind of wolf. Wait a sec, and I'll find a bit of info...
Wargs ~ 'The ferocious and intelligent race of wolves that lived in the northern Vales of Anduin, and probably elsewhere in the north of Middle-earth.'
That is from The Enclyclopedia of Arda. I think that we all trust that site. So, I think that is what they are, an extra intelligent breed of wolf.

Because they recognised that by co-operating with each other they would find it easier to achieve what they wanted. I believe (though I could well be wrong) tha in the Hobbit Tolkien says somewhere that the Wargs were friends of the Orcs...

So in other words, the Wargs and orcs compromised, right?

Yeah.
To be a little more specific than Darrell, in The Hobbit, it says that the Wargs and Goblins of the mountains would often cooperate with each other to attack the woodsmen who lived in the area, since together they could succeed better.
Wargs are just an extra-large and extra-intelligent breed of wolves, though I must say, I'm not all that happy with Tolkien for making Wolves bad....they're really cool, in my opinion, though I can tolerate his decision.

Right. As has been said, the Wargs were not being controlled by the Orcs. They were working together toward a common goal. That goal just happened to be evil. If you'll remember, in The Hobbit, the Wargs detained Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Dwarves in the trees until the Goblins could come to help them cut down the trees and get them all. So, it's not really an act of slavery, it's an act of cooperation.

Actually the Goblins tried to burn the trees down, not cut them down....

Tis true...... I did know that. I've read The Hobbit countless times. I wonder why I put cut them down? Ah well. Thanks for correcting me and sorry 'bout that to everyone else.

In the Hobbit, Tolkien says:
"But even the wild wargs (for so the evil wolves over the edge of the wild were named) cannot climb trees." Out of the Frying Pan, Into the Fire, chapter 6 of the Hobbit

shhh....... I'm going off topic.
Lalithmindil, you're new sig/avvie set is making me want cookies very very badly. I really really want cookies now. Especially chocolate chip ones. And I don't think we have any in my house. Which is goo for me, because if we did, then I would eat them. Anyways, I like them. They made me laugh, in addition to the cookie lust.
Erm........... *desperately attempts to slavage post from complete off-topicness*............ a very good point to make there? Alright I give up.

^^ I know, makes me want them, too!
Noldor, what makes you think wargs could speak? I'm not challenging it, I'd just never heard that before and would like proof.

You recall well, Noldor! Here on page 95 of my copy, in Chapter 6, it reads:
"...he spoke to them in the dreadful language of the wargs...Every now and then all the wargs in the circle would answer their gray chief all together..."
