Treebeard is one of my favorite chapters (and character) in the Two Towers. Why do you think PJ chose to change the outcome of the Entmoot and have Pippin "trick" Treebeard into fighting against Saruman and the Orcs in the movie?

Maybe because it gave Pippin something to do? See, I think some people watched the first movie and didn't really understand why Merry and Pippin were there. I think PJ might have been trying to show them that Hobbits can be heroic even if they started out as just comic relief. Or something. *shrugs*

I think PJ wanted to show heroic and fighting hobbits. Thats why they were sitting on treebeard's top.

I agree with you Telcontar. He was more "wise" and a lot more interesting. As for giving Pippin something to do and showing that Hobbits could be Heroic i think that may have something to do with it Anie Surion. I still would have loved to see all the Ents marching through the forest and singing their war song. That would have been a scene Huh?Kind of scary though. But, like you guys said, Pippn and Merry needed something to do and i guess thats why PJ did what he did.

Yeah... I still think he could've done it differently, but I guess I think like that a lot.

In the movie, Merry tried so hard to get the trees to fight to only be decliened, Pippin them says that Shire will always be there, Merry then explainning that this went on there would be no Shire left, Im guessing Pippin thought about this and decided to show the trees what could really happen, but my thoughts would that Treebeard was a bit selfish, I mean he only agreed to fighting when he saw that HIS people were the ones being affected at the time. May it just been me but that seemed kind of selfish, I suppose that to open his eyes Pippin had to show him a bit of...whats the word...Tree abuse? :confused2: I guess thats works....Iono, anyways Next post!!

Which was completely unecessary, because it didn't do it to the extent that Tolkien showed in RotK, and it drew from that to the extent that Pippin's development in RotK wasn't as great. Personally, I wasn't very happy that PJ did that. It spoiled the Ents for me.

I think that's rather melodramatic. PJ simply interpreted Pippin in a different way.

Not necessarily. Well....perhaps he did, but he didn't display that interpretation onscreen. Instead, he changed Pippin, Merry, and the Ents, to show how he thought they should be, which was rather a lot different than what I thought, with the end result that I don't much like the way Pippin, Merry, and the Ents are portrayed in TTT.

I suppose thats one of the things I just dont understand, I mean why change things around? They already basically have a script why change things around? I mean sure cut out things maybe but why change?

Oops...uhm..I drifted away  Sorry

Lol!
Well things have to be cut out and stuff like that obviously with shortage of time so one reason for turning things around may be that they need to be in order to make sense of events if you know what I'm getting at. Another reason could simply be that the director percieves events in their own way and therefore may wish to convey their thoughts - although I know why it's annoying sometimes. I feel that too.

Back on topic however - Obviously the way in which a director interprets things is going to be different to how we do. Think about it. The images that PJ picked up from reading the books are obviously going to differ to what we see, but that comes with all movies that originate in books. We all see things differently and although it is disappointing when this happens just think that if you were director, you'd probably displease a lot of people too (:

Well, as I said in my last post here--regardless of how PJ interpreted that chapter, he changed it for the movie. That's not portraying his interpretation, that's showing how he thinks the chapter should be. That annoys me. I like Tolkien's version better, since, as I said, it pretty much ruined Pippin and Treebeard for me.

Isn't that portyraying his interpretation? :o

Lol. I understand you feel strongly about this and that's fine lol everyone's entitled to their own views, things like that bug me too sometimes but at the end of the day they were his movies and he was entitled to alter them as far as he felt they needed to be altered :)

I think Tolkien would have loved the movie. I'm sure his descendents did (:
