"So do all who live to see such times, but that is not for them to decide. All we must decide is what to do with the time that is given to us."
Certainly these, being some of Gandalf's most oft quoted words, have made an impact on my kids. And I have been impressed with their placement in the story, drama and the way they are put together. But only recently have I given thought to what they really mean. It seems like it is a paradigm shift fromt he way most people think. Life is about who we are and not about what happens to us? Its a big subject but I would like to hear your thoughts.

I agree with you, Sinbearer.
Bad things happen, and it's up to us to decide what to do about them. We can't stop them from happening, but we can decide what to do with the short time we have. I don't know if that made sense, hehe, but that's my two cents!

These words meant a lot to me last year when I was told my grandfather had ALS. I would be lying to say that it didn't devastate me for time. This was my grandfather and ALS is a horrible way to go. But the way I saw it I had two roads I could take. I could let the pain rule over me and hide away from what was going on... or I could walk with my family through this and be there for them when things got real bad. It wouldn't be truthful for me to say that I never hid myself away from what was going on, but for the most part I decided that "the time I was given" I used to make life easier on my grandfather and grandmother. And now I can use what I went through to help the other people around me that go through pain and heartache.
I think that's what Gandalf was talking about. Life is about the choices we make and not what what has been handed us.

I think he's just saying that it's not for us to judge people and be sort of gods of the world. We're not in charge of everything, only what is happening NOW and to US.

In my mind, he's basically just saying to use your time wisely, because we only have a little of it.

there are a lot of kinds of hurt in this world, and when you think about it, no one views something completely like another. what may be depressing to one may be amusing to another [such as a slasher flick, i guess?] What facinates Gandalf is probably what different people do in the same situation or how people develop due to those situations. For example, he sent poor old Bilbo on a very unwanted adventure and he came back richer than ever and ended up living out many of his remaining days in the House of Elrond. Anyway, I believe it comes down to choice. Sometimes choice is a nuisance, and depending on our consience and up-bringing we act differently than our neighbors. So, to put it very simply I guess it's either the glass is half full or half empty depending on where one is in life.

Anyway, I believe that I put more than my share of ideas in to one paragraph.
