Oh, I love Gollum! :) In both the books and the movie actually. I think PJ did a great job in bringing him to life, and Andy Serkis was just, like, amazing. I mean, one minute Gollum can scare you out of your socks, and the next minute he can have you going "Awwwww" and making all these adoring faces. :) One thing that I was a little...wierd on was the fact that Smeagol (in the opening part of ROTK, the movie) sounded so much like Gollum even when he was still that a hobbit. (or hobbit-like, whatever he was  ). I think that he probably should have had a more normal-sounding voice when he was a "hobbit", because I imagine that the pain in his throat and the other physical distortion would be the reason why his voice sounds a little throaty and strangled. I dunno. Anyone else got a comment on that?

oh... that's a really good point....but they called smeag-y gollum because of the noise he made in his throat, so he probably did have a weird voice before then...i think, but good point! :-D

Yeah...it's just something I've been wondering about, because everyone started calling him Gollum after he got the Ring because of the noise he made in his throat, and we all know the Ring was responsible for making him look the way he looks, so I don't know...I guess you might as well just call me an "inquisitive" hobbit. The strangeness of life...

When I read the book, I thought Gollum was both good and bad. The good, I think was trying to seep through the bad. Like Frodo, I felt pity for him and was hoping that he would return to his "old self" when the ring was destroyed. However, I was surprised that he [/i]did something "good" if you can call it that, he fell over the cliff along with the ring, however he himself perished. I did not like him biting off Frodo's finger though, but at the time, I think he was obsessed with the ring. In the movie, I think Peter Jackson portrayed Gollum well. However, from the Tolkein pictures I have seen, he is much more skinner. Well, that's it.

I've always felt sorry for Gollum :( I love him; it's so sad to see what the ring did to him. I thought that he was really well done in the movies! Andy Serkis was perfect :)

well I'm sorta sorry for smeagol, but...here goes...I'm kinda mad at him. He wasn't strong enough to control the ring! By being stupid, he ended up almost ruining everything. I DO feel sorry for him though--it's not his fault he found the ring--but I just wish he could handle it better.

Ok, he is just a silly happy hobbit. So it's not really his fault.

Well then, I am sad his life was corrupted but I am still disappointed.

I AM CONFUSING MYSELF!!!

But I get really mad at Gollum...Smeagol is like a weak little kid trying to figure out what's right. Frodo on the other hand is mature--that's why he can handle it.

Wow I said something smart...

I think I'n going to have to disagree with you Riniel.

I don't think Frodo could handle the Ring at all. He was just like Gollum, everyday becoming weaker, sucumbing to the power of the Ring. In the end if Sam hadn't of been there to help him, I don't think Frodo would have had the will to go on. Sooner or later he would fall prey to the Ring, and it would probably drive him mad as it did Gollum.

And if Gollum hadn't have become Gollum the Ring might have never been found and Frodo might have never thrown the Rng into Mt.Doom. Actually, Frodo never did throw it into Mt.Doom, instead Gollum bit it off Frodo's finger.

We owe a lot of thanks to Gollum, without him the story of the Ring could have kept going on into destruction and ruin.

Larael Greenleaf, I totally agree with you :-)

but I think Frodo COULD handle the ring a bit better but it wasn't enough...

I think that's what we're all trying to say. Frodo handled the Ring a bit better than Gollum, but Frodo also had help. If Sam hadn't been there to help Frodo, he would've succumbed to it's force just as Gollum did.

Am I on the right track?
