What do you think of Gollem?

I have to say I was very cutious who he was when I read about him in the FotR for the first time. In TTT he gets a bigger role, especially in the movie.

Do you think PJ made him like you imagined him from the book? I think he did, maybe he should have been a little more hobbit-like.

Well, my impression of Gollum was like WHOA this is totally weird....jk. At first I couldn't decide if I thought he was evil or good, but then I realized hes kind of both, hence the Smeagol/Gollum. Then I was really sad because he was an innocent person until he was corrupted by the ring, and then I freaked out becuase I thought Frodo would end up that way.

I never did have a mental image of Gollum/Smeagol. I just thought of him as something that might crawl, and I imagined very big eyes. That was it.......the voice though, what he says reminds of something kind of snake like. I don't know....

My impression of Gollum is well, i'm not sure, he is such a confuzzling character. :)

You know what? I actually feel sorry for him. It's not necessarily his fault for what happened to him - he's an innocent victim, and it's a sad story. It's the environment, not his own self I believe, that led him to that predicament. But then, I suppose that if you go with my theory, then all criminals in the world are innocent because they weren't brought up right, etc. to behave a certain way -

Basically, I feel bad for him. :bye2:

I pitty him so much. He's so sweet as a smeagol. In the movie you see this battle between to two so clear. Smeagol is so sweet, but Gollum freaks me out. I also thought Frodo might become...well maybe not as Gollum because he's stronger, but it might end up wrong with him.

Maybe everyone is good...I don't know what brings them to the wrong path.

I feel sorry for him too. I don't believe it was his fault. Look at Frodo, Boromir, Isildur and the rest and see what the ring does to them.
But I do believe Gollem wasn't that strong. He just sees the ring and kills Deagol to have it. Frodo wouldn't do that, would he

I noticed one thing: in the beginning of TT Gollem is bad and Smeagol is good. In the end they're both bad. ("Smeagol wants to see them.. dead.")

Gollum...well the way that I imagined him in the books is almost alike in the movie, but yes he should have been more hobbit like, but then again he Ring corrupted both his mind and body so I thnk that the was PJ made him in the movie is OK. I pity him, my Elf friends...

Gollum talked to Smeagol about the ring thing. Smeagols personality was never strong. that's why the ring chocce him to be found by.

Gollum/Smeagol was so obsessed with the ring that the idea of finally getting it after the hobbits are killed appeals to both the Gollum and Smeagol sides. So ya they both turn bad or you could say that Gollum takes over Smeagol.

My dad made a good point one time when I was talking about something Andy Serkis had said about doing Gollums voice. (He said something like he tried to base the Gollum voice on his two cats when they hack up hairballs....gross....anyhoo,) Dad said that you notice that every time Gollum says his own name it seems like hes choking on the words. It chokes him to say his own name.

That's incredibly sad if you really think about it...like he has no respect left for his former self. It's like people who live on the street and change their names to things like "brute" or "invisible" because they either have no respect for or dont remember who they used to be. I just find the horrible sense of self...well...horrible! It makes me pity him more then anything even if he IS evil. I did like how PJ portrayed him..oh and Andy Serkis of course. It's almost exactly how I pictured him. And the voice is brilliant!

:bye2:

I love the character of Gollum/Smeagol. PJ and Andy did such a great job. If you watched the special features they were going to make him look really different, and then Andy came and they changed Gollum to look like Andy a little bit. So Andy said that gollum looked like a mix between his son and his grandpa(Well I am pretty sure it was his son and grandpa or something like that)

Wow . . . from what I'm reading, a lot of us here seem to feel sorry for him. And for good reason too. His story is so sad.

And I'd like to comment here that I think Andy Serkis did a marvelous job as Gollum/Smeagol - very impressive, considering how much he had to go through - not only on camera, but also having to work with the computer animation things - that's very complicating, and also can be tiring - especially considering that for the most part, he'll show up on screen as a computer animation, rather than his own flesh and blood. I really don't think that he was credited enough. :bye2:

I feel bad for him but then again, it was Smeagols chioce to kill Deagol he didnt have to listen to the ring! It would have been a hard chioce though...
I feel like Sam about Gollum in a way.

The Ring has consumed Gollum, through and through. Although he may be " free " of Gollum, later in the movie, he is still under the influence of the ring. The One Ring leaves no bearer unscared. Bilbo had an insane demonic personality when he possesed the Ring, and as soon as he gave it up, Old age quickly caught up with him. Frodo becomes world weary.
Gollum, becomes a helpless slave.
Although you pity him in some sense, it's almost repulsive how strong a hold the Ring has on him...Still, I pity Smeagol. Not the murderor Gollum. Smeagol.
